Default Relocating to Vermont from PA/NJ

Hi everyone. I am currently in the process of relocating from PA/NJ to Vermont. Some of the nice places I've heard about in Vermont are Burlington and Montpelier. Are there others? My plan would be to live somehwere outside the skirts of one of the major cities. Could someone offer me information as to what towns would be nice to live in that are quiet but that are also close to the major cities and how the employment opportunities are in the state. I am currently in the IT and project management field with a degree in business. This board has been great in assiting with information. Thank you all so very much.

We don't have any major cities. Burlington is our largest city with 40,000 people. The "metro" area is somewhere between 150K and 200K. Montpelier's population is around 8,000. Count Barre and the surrounding towns and your are looking at a population of around 30K.
The job market is really, really tough. I would not come without a job lined up. Due to the economy, many companies are either laying off people or putting on hiring freezes.
For an idea as to what jobs are available, check out burlingtonfreepress.com | The Burlington Free Press | Burlington news, community, entertainment, yellow pages and classifieds. Serving Burlington, Vermont or Seven Days | Vermont's Independent Voice for the Burlington area. Timesargus.com | Barre-Montpelier Times Argus | Vermont news, Vermont jobs, Montpelier real estate, Barre real estate for the Montpelier/Barre area. You may also want to check out the State's un-employment website as they have job listings there. Not sure of the url but if you go to Vermont.gov you should be able to find it easily. It may be JobsInVT.com - Local Vermont jobs, careers and employment (Home).

Good luck.

Burlington is the only real city. For Montpelier think about living somewhere between Thetford and Chelsea that gives you the choice of commuting to Montpelier or Hanover
/W.Lebanon in NH.

Plenty of quiet towns within easy commute of places where employment might exist. The key is to obtain employment which will pay the bills. Lots of homes for sale and come the following spring and summer the number will probably increase. If you are lucky the talk of lowering mortgage rates will happen and then with either income or money in the bank combined with good credit there might be some good opportunities to be had.

I live in Burlington, so I'm partial - but I do believe Chittenden County has an awful lot to offer. It's the place many people from other states end up settling on, because it seems like it offers what they came for, but also has most of what they'd otherwise miss.

Chittenden County is:
(booming) Burlington, (suburban) South Burlington, (diffuse) Colchester, (urban) Winooski, (pastoral) Shelburne and Charlotte, (conveniently located) Hinesburg, (intriguingly named) St. George, (rural) Huntington, (hip, desirable little) Richmond, (fascinating in the NYT recently) Starksboro, (well named) Underhill, (wonderful) Westford, (many faceted) Williston, (alpine and nordic) Bolton, (little) Buel's Gore, (exciting) Essex and Essex Junction, (lovely little) Jericho, & Jericho Village, and last but not least ...(affordable) Milton,
