My fiancé was in Killington last year, around June if I remember correctly. He was there for three or four days and when he got there, he called me and told me the only thing open asides from his hotel was a diner. Everything else was closed. He had arrived mid-week, so I told him maybe it would change on Friday/Saturday, but it was the same situation. I had always assumed that Killington, while a resort town, would have a substantial year-round population but maybe not?

Wow! I wonder where he was? As with many small towns, Killington covers a broad range of area and he might have been in a remote corner of the town.
There are year-round residents in Killington so there is a market, a general store, and other shops. Even in June, Killington Road restaurants and shops are open all week long, including at night. Route 4 West from Killington to Rutland has a few restaurants open on weeknights all year long. And Rutland is 15 minutes away with the usual small city offerings of restaurants and stores open every night.

Thanks, I realized much later I messed that one up. I remember the old post office from the very early 80s when I stopped there to pick up a supply drop while thru hiking.

It's also important to remember that Killington town itself is pretty small and many businesses and housing options may very be in adjoining towns such as Mendon on US 4 heading west toward Rutland. I know this past summer I had to make a few trips to Rutland midweek and saw quite a few places shuttered with for sale or for lease signs up on US 4 and Vt 100. The major resorts do run four season operations, but that will not always translate into a good business climate for the adjoining area. Reports from several town clerks from the "gold towns" reflects a sharp drop in property sales transactions and this is just one of many indicators that money is not flowing in.

This has been the case since I moved here in 1996! There are several business sites that my husband and I semi-jokingly refer to as "accursed" because they are occasionally in business but usually for sale.

i think you will find this in any town - some place just work for a business and others do not. with this economy we have quite a few out of business signs around here too.
the rental we are looking into is year-round and the gentlemen is looking for long term tenants so that is very good news.

we will be renting for awhile but eventually we would love to purchase a home in VT - wondering on property taxes - since most seem to say they are high. here in MA we have a 4br home with 2477 sq ft of living space with a property tax of $3,600.00 a year. curious as to the comparison.

It depends on the town and the town's assessed value of your home. We have a 5 year old 3 bedroom cape, 1600ish square feet on 5 acres and pay about $4k/year.

our home is 37 years old & only on 0.46 acres with a property value of $325K - our tax rate is $11.07 p/$1K.
