While we can debate whether schools should close when it gets below zero, let's keep in mind something that should be a rule. Keep warm clothing, blankets, a shovel, flashlight, food/water, a book of matches and first aid gear in your car in case you get stranded or go off over a bank on an icy road. Keep your gas tank filled at all times. And keep your cell phone charged of course !

Or don't go off the road or run out of gas ........ [which has been my choice for 51 years]

Keep a cell phone charger in the car, the kind that plugs into the cigarette lighter port.

Keep some cat litter or similar material for traction, in case you get stuck in snow.

Keep extra socks. If your feet get wet you'll need to change socks. I went into two houses where I was asked to remove my shoes. Both times I got my feet wet when I put my snow boots back on.

Keep a pair of slip-on ice cleats for walking on ice, e.g. Stabilicers or Yaktrax.

And have good snow tires. Some people like studded tires and some don't feel the need for them.

Enjoy lots snow and crisp winter air.

A good point about keeping cell phones charged, but also remember that you might very well be stuck or broken down in a dead zone and may have either a very long wait or have to start hoofing. A guy I work with coming into work this winter at 11:30 pm had a mechanical failure and could not get any garage to come out until 7:00 am so if you are traveling at off peak hours keep this in mind. Having extra boots, socks, and layered clothing is a must. For the really cold days and windy conditions a balaclava with additional watch cap is also a very good idea. Keeping such a ready kit in the car makes good sense. I also have a headlamp (hands free, handy when changing a tire) and also a lightweight reflector vest. Despite common sense quite few people continue to travel dressed for May weather when its below zero out. Your well being and safety is your ultimate responsibility.
