Question worried about cell phone service in vt

Some friends and family of mine are leaving for Vermont in a couple days to go on a snowmobiling trip. They will be staying near the St. Johnsbury, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is any cell phone service around there? They all have Verizon and I would like to be able to keep in contact with them while they are there. I'm just looking for some options.. Any help is very much appreciated.

There is cell service in St. Johnsbury. I was just there with my little cousin who is from CA and she was using her blackberry to text her friends like there was no tomorrow
It's when you get out into the outlying areas where it can get spotty.
You can always call the hotel they are staying at and talk to them on a land line if need be.

I've rode out of Lydonville before which is next to St. Johnsbury. Most likely your friends will be riding north towards Island Pond. On the way, Burke Mountain has a Verizon tower and from what I've read, Island Pond has no service. Here are a couple user comments...

Cell service throughout the state depends on the carrier and your location. Even in Chittenden county there are numerous dead zones so there is really no sure fire accurate map guaranteeing service. Check with locals at your destination who will no doubt have current information based on actual use and knowledge of the area.

T-Mobile (roaming), AT+T, and Verizon have pretty good coverage, even in rural areas. Sprint has very little.

If VT had cell service then some of those highfalutin hard working type A folks might show up and make everyone else look lazy. Perish the thought.

I have Unicel, which of course I'll switch to AT&T in the next few months. I live and work from home in Rutland, and I've been doing field work in Bennington, Rutland, and Addison counties with frequent trips to Montpelier and Burlington.

I've encountered only a few dead spots and have had good service most everywhere else. Which tells you how much I've been talking and driving. With a headset, but still!

Verizon has the best coverage in Vermont. They were the first to put up towers in the state. Up untill recently it was Verizon and Unicell as literally the only carriers. People visiting the state with att, sprint, t-mobile were roaming on unicell or verizon towers. Verizon has recently bought out unicell. Part of the take over involved Verizon and ATT swapping former unicell cell sites and customers. There was a lawsuit involved over the matter otherwise Verizon would have owned almost every tower in VT and there would have been no competion.

As Flu said it depends on your local and your carrier. Here in the MRV we have no Verizon service but that is supposed to change this summer. We have Unicel, Sprint and T-Mobile and just recently At&T.

I have Verizon and my experience in Windsor County has been fair.

It's aces along I-91; when I am on route 103 it drops calls here and there between I-91 and Ludlow. Dead spots on 106, 10, 11 and up on the VAST trails. Touch and go on some sections of 100.
