I totally agree. Though I am not overly a fan of this cold and snow, I find the economy much more challenging. It has never been so hard for me to find a job anywhere I have ever lived.
PS If you are in Putney, try the Putney Diner.

I've been to the Putney Diner. It's a nice place. Small, intimate and fairly friendly. The food should be good, but, I can't say for sure, as I only had some soup. I planned to return, but the next time I ate out in Putney, I tried the Front Porch Cafe. It was great, and with great decor, but it was quite expensive. I'm planning to go to Putney today and I might stop at the diner, just for the treat of it. Maybe, though, I'll just go straight home and cook.
I'm trying to limit my eating out, much as I enjoy it. I'm working to improve the control and quality of what I eat. Also, eating prepared food, either in a restaurant or from a take-out place, can be a real financial drain if done too much. And the Vermont restaurant tax doesn't help.

I think there is a considerable difference in the climate between NYC and Vermont... even Southern Vermont. NYC last saw -15 in 1934. I saw that yesterday. And last week (actually last week it was colder). We see it every year.
I definitely Southern Vermont is more receptive to incoming flatlanders than Central or Northern Vermont - so many of those living in Bennington and Brattleboro are displaced NYers it's harder to be biased. I think as you head further north, you encounter far more of the "flatlander hatred" so often seen right here on this forum...
There is most definitely a bias though when it comes to hiring from out of state. In some cases, we were told it was the reason we were not offered jobs. In the my spouse's case, his company readily admits to it. It's definitely out there, whether you have experienced it or not...

I recommend checking out Curtis BBQ in Putney. Its seasonal though and only open April-Oct. Curtis is from Georgia and has been doing BBQ there for 39 years. Quite an interesting place to check out. Curtis has his pet pig always by his side. He is really a great guy and will chat up with anyone while he is BBQ over an open wood fire. I think his daughter started a place in Chester too.

Good lord, here are we are discussing what cuisine to eat. Sorry folks, over the weekend after attending my drill with my unit I found yet more folks forced into dire straits, and the news just keeps getting worse and worse. At least in our case we will be deploying by the end of the year and that means steady income. Today I found out that my civilian job will be gone between March and June, and this is a job that is funded to the state by federal money. So much for the stimulus I guess. For those of you with solid dependable work, god bless you, but for the rest of us we have some major dilemmas to work through. Personally, my biggest fear is the ability to be able to sell my house. By being out of the country for a year it will just make it even more difficult. Who knows, maybe somebody who is on this board looking for their Vermont dream may just buy my place eventually. All I can say at this point is that if you want to be near Burlington, have 10+ acres, a 2550 home, beautiful woods and streams, etc, etc, you may just be in luck soon.

Well, we have to eat, what can you do? At least if we get to eat out on a rare occasion, you can find a nice place thanks to a recommendation.

Bless you my friend Flu. Thank you for doing what you do for all of us. Thank you. absolute best of luck with selling your home and future employment upon your return from the sand box, if that's where you're headed. Stay alive man, stay alive. and thanks for refocusing the thread at least for one posting's worth away from the Chinese food discussion.

Guess I am just used to eating meals out of bag, MRE's (Military Meal Ready to Eat), however, I do on occassion appreciate a well prepared restaurant meal. Through trial and error I have found that MRE varieties when heated are on par with quite a bit of our over priced area eateries.

Well, it's my birthday next week so it's a very rare treat (since moving here and money becoming very tight).
Sorry if I sounded a mite too excited. This is what my life has become in the last few months--psyched about simple things like eating out!
I also wish you good luck, Flu, when you are deployed. I hope it's not to the M.E.
