Food in Vermont/Recommend a place to eat in your area.
As Vter said so well, we were going a bit nuts about food in the other thread.
I would love places to eat recommendations in VT and NH, since I live near both. Maybe people on the NY border of VT can tell us about places they like.
I am particularly interested in NON tourist places. As many of us know, the 'hole in the wall' is often the best place to eat.
For new people to VT, I think this would also be helpful.
Sadly, for any of you near the Upper Valley, we discovered The Four Aces is now for lease. At Christmas time we found out the owner was ill. I am not sure what has happened since then. I just know last week we went by and there were signs everywhere. Another good place gone...

Unfortunately, where I spend a lot of my time is pretty touristy, but I have some favorites that are worth it, and not necessarily geared for the out of towner.
Hen of the Wood - Fine Dining in Waterbury, Vermont
Hen of the Wood, Waterbury
This is not a cheap place by any means, but the food is beyond worth it. The chef was named one of Food and Wine's best chefs in the country last year...the food is mostly locally sourced, the ambiance is amazing and the service is great. If you are looking for a special meal, this is it.
The Alchemist Pub and Brewery
The Alchemist, also in Waterbury, on Main Street
Brew their own beer, which is really good. Pub food, but locally grown as well and what I've had has been good.
There is also Ocha Thai, which opened recently in Waterbury. I've read amazing things about it, I've yet to go though. I believe the owners also own the Thai place in Montpelier. I believe it's on Main Street. No web site though.

Sherycat, I know you are a vegan, but can you recommend some good restaurants in greater Rutland that a carnivore would like? I often meet my mother in Rutland for l lunch and we always end up at the 99. Blech. I've heard Harry's (or something like that) downtown is good?
Here are some of my favorites in our area:
Bobcat Cafe, Bristol ( http://www.bobcatcafe.com/)- excellent food. local ingredients when possible. On the gourmetish side, but not at all pretentious. They brew their own beer.
Black Sheep Bistro, Vergennes ( Black Sheep Bistro - 7 Nights Guide to Vermont Restaurants and Bars) - see above description regarding the Bobcat, except they don't brew their own beer.
Rosie's, Middlebury - basic, comfort food. Good breakfasts and lunch. We never go for dinner for some reason. Extremely popular with locals.
Steve's Park Diner, Middlebury - Yummy diner food. Open for lunch/dinner only.
Good Times Cafe, Hinesburg - best pizza in my area that I've had. They also have an eclectic non-pizza menu with items ranging from chana masala to chicken cutlet sandwiches.
Then there is Burlington....lots of awesome choices there. A Single Pebble ( Chinese restaurants, Chinese food, Burlington VT) has got to be the best chinese in Vermont. Not your typical americanized chinese food.

These are the restaurants we frequent when we are in the St. Johnsbury/Lyndonville/Burke Area:
Elements, St. Johnsbury - on the "high-end" side, but it's yummy and very popular with locals. If you are in StJ and want a nice meal, this is the place to go. Elements Restaurant
Anthony's Diner, St. Johnsbury - awesome "greasy spoon" type place. Great breakfasts and try the Woodsman's burger if you are there at lunchtime. Anthony's Diner - 7 Nights Guide to Vermont Restaurants and Bars
The Creamery, Danville - This is a very popular local restaurant located in an old Creamery building. Menu changes daily. Creamery Restaurant, The - 7 Nights Guide to Vermont Restaurants and Bars
Miss Lyndonville Diner, Lyndonvile - VERY popular diner with yummy diner food. Miss Lyndonville Diner - 7 Nights Guide to Vermont Restaurants and Bars
Kham's Thai, St. Johnsbury - I was very surprised at how good this place is. I'm not a Thai food expert by any means though. Kham's Thai Cuisine - 7 Nights Guide to Vermont Restaurants and Bars
Tamarac Grill, Burke - higher endish restaurant at Burke Mountain Ski Area. Casual, yet elegant at the same time. Food is on the gourmetish side, but not pretentious. Local products are used when available. Tamarack Grill - 7 Nights Guide to Vermont Restaurants and Bars
Ramunto's Pizza, St. Johnsbury - best pizza in StJ IMO. There are other Ramunto's across Vermont including Rutland and Middlebury.

Vter, I am sure Sherylcatmom will have some suggestions, but I might say that the South Station has a luncheon buffet each day that is very good. Salad bar and hot dishes. Has something for everyone !
Tapas, downtown, is good also.
Mary's in West Rutland has specials each day. It is on Main St. Closes at 2 pm. A local "secret". Breakfast is supposed to be great, very busy on week-ends!! We've yet to get in as there has always been a line on Sunday morning!

The members of the RAVE car club meet there for breakfast when they are going on a day-long cruise. Those folks love good food so JR's must be excellent. We have not stopped there, but find Cattails on Rt. 7 good and we often stop at Sully's in Brandon. Very good food and reasonable prices.

Can anyone tell me if the Springfield Diner ever re-opened? We were up the Summer of '07 and had planned to stop in but they had just closed. We missed them by like two days! We were back in '08 but didn't ever make it to Springfield, we headed North to Waterbury. I would love to head back in '09! Actually, if I close my eyes... I am already there!

We LOVE the Alchemist! A cold brew with their soft pretzel pieces and beer-cheese dip...just thinking about it makes me want that now and it's only 9:30 a.m!
TKLN, We've been meaning to try Hen of the Wood, and your 'review' just pushed me into 'gonna do it' mode. Next visit to VT will include a dinner there.
