We are in NY 20 miles from VT border and only have about a 2 week period that the black flies are annoying. Friends in VT indicate it is a short period each year.

On another lighter note, our apartment last year (our old apartment in a very old house) was a haven for lady bugs! We had them everywhere! They crawled out the window gaps, on the ceiling, on the walls...it was weird...

But the Chinese say they are good luck!

We spend our spring/summers in a screened in porch. We're looking for an area where we can enjoy our yard and outdoor activities. Is it a regional thing in Vermont? Are the bugs so bad that it'll force you inside? I thought Vermont would be great for outdoor activities in the summer but, it there's a massive bug issue, I guess not.
Are you in the Jersey shore area? When I was visiting a friend this summer, the green heads and mosquitos this year were horrendous. Locals agreed they were worse this year than in the past.

If the black flies are only around for a short period, I wonder what those things are on my steer. They are small and black.
I also have Ladybugs all year long. I have to open my windows in the winter because the flies somehow get between the screen and window pane. Large swarms of flies fall out and no matter what I do, I can't stop this from happening. I even have wasps in the house this winter. One thing about VT, we have some healthy bugs!! They are huge! I guess the only way to stop it is to hire an exterminator but that is not in my budget.

veggieck is on a distinguished road
good grief.... this sounds horrible... i was hoping the bug problem was minor but, it looks like it'll prevent me from moving to VT. I'm very disappointed, really had my heart set on moving to NE. I love spring and summer, outdoor activities, and getting outside. Dealing with black flies sounds like more than a minor nuisance.

I would also like to know what those small bugs are that hang around all summer! I thought they were black flies. (they are like gnats and get in your eyes, hair, mouth). Yuck.

We had wasps at our last place, too.

The bugs are big and so are the crows here in VT! (lots of road kill I guess).

We still having stopped hiking or doing outside things, though, because of the bugs. Like I said, the mosquitoes are minimal where I live (lack of water, I guess). I hated those damn things on Long Island. Here, we get less of them.

Ewwwwww. I've seen them and since they look a little too 'cucaracha-ish' I stomp them, squish them, trap them under whatever is handy in an effort to remove and eradicate them.
