If you live in Burlington or South Burlington bugs won't be bad except for mosquitoes? And where are there no mosquitoes?

In Vermont?? Was he lost?

We woke up with a bat in our bed this summer (opening day of Dark Knight). He came in through a small tear in a window screen and was chasing bugs. He bit hubby too...

I understand the white-nose bacteria that has been killing bats has spread even farther this year. I got a new bat house for christmas this year. I'm hoping...

Not in VT, on Long Island. On the various websites, it states that this spider inhabits the midwest and some of the southern states, but I know two people that were bitten on LI. One of them was in the hospital for ten days. Maybe they were two lost recluses that lost their way!

I've heard of them turning up in places they shouldn't because they got away in packages, etc., that were shipped from one part of the country to another.

They can be found here in North Central PA. I have a friend who's father was bitten a few years back.

I know stray spiders sometimes find themselves as stowaways... Vermont has had a few black widows turn up in the last few years as well. I just always thought of the recluse as southern spider.

Really? What other creepy crawlers do you house up there? Any Rattlers? I dislike snakes just about as much as spiders. Here in PA we have a black fuzzy spider that can see you coming from a mile away and they jump. They also build a mud nest. I am not sure what the name of this particular spider is... we are not on a first name basis. I'm getting goosebumps just typing about them

Rattlers are pretty rare here though and those that are here are limited to a pretty small range.
We have big ugly wolf spiders that can get as big as the palm of your hand. You probably have them in PA though, pabear. They are pretty common. The garage and chicken coop of our house in Bennington was infested with them.
veggieck - you don't want DEET. Nasty stuff. I absolutely swear by a product called Bite Blocker by Homs. It is all natural organic repellent (and I am not one who NEEDS organic stuff) and works unbelievably well. I have sent so many people to check this stuff out and they always come back raving about it. I wish I could get some kind of kickback or something! I found it because I needed DEET free repellent (my daughter is highly reactive to mosquitos) and daycares can not have DEET on the premises by law. Unfortunately, her daycare had a small slow moving stream located in the woods behind it so there were a TON of mosquitos. This was years ago and now, we still use this stuff. Give it a try when you are here in the summer!
