Terrific post, Treeclimber.

One observation - according to a Feb 8, 2007 piece in The Burlington Free Press (not a paper I'm wild about - but the newspaper of record here, I'm afraid) only 13 percent of Vermonters don't have access to broadband. I'd never have believed it (in fact I'm not sure I do believe it ) but there you have it...

Our Republican Governor (who was the State campaign chair for George W. Bush I believe) has made broadband a priority though, so it's likely to get even better.

Hi, re: felon w/firearm...I believe there is a federal law which prohibits any felon from having a firearm, regardless of muzzle loader or otherwise.

Well, since I'm a convicted felon--drug possession back in the 60s--I know something about this. Vermont allows convicted felons to possess a muzzle loader.

BTW, I mentioned in another post that I had been writing town-wide letters in Middletown Springs, VT to enlighten the masses as to the idiotcy of the liberal weasels in that town.

Quess what? The liberal weasels there went and got my 30-year-old felony records, mailed them to me anonymously in an attempt to quell my letter campaign, and when that didn't work, tried to determine if I owned a hunting rifle, because as a convicted felon, unless I get a pardon, I am not allowed to possess firearms. They figured if they could prove I had a hunting rifle, I could be sent to prison. And these were folks who I had once given the the-good-old-boy discount to when working on their trees.

Anyway, want to clear up a few things, we DO love Vermont and we have many many friends there. Personally, no one has been unkind to us, so this was not meant to be a "bash" vermonters thread.

And by the way, we can afford the maple syrup (people are emailing me how to get some cheap, LOL), As welll as skiing (someone stated that VT ski days are less expensive, yes I know, I lived there 3 times for several years, but you know what most locals can't afford the discount even, espcecially in Stowe). Locals can't afford the syrup and to ski....
it is just a saying that means the locals are struggling and the rich get to enjoy the Vermont Life Magazine type lifestyle as the locals just service the tourists.

BUT on the other hand, it is difficult to live there and the majority of the locals do not welcome the outsiders (I am not saying everybody, funny you always have to say that because you get a bunch of emails stating how someone knows someone else who is not like that, yes there are exceptions to everything... )
There are a lot of Orvis Stowe City type snobs (I like orvis and stowe too ) that drive up the costs and live in mansions for a month a year at best, they lie about living there all year to skate the costs of taxes ( I know I was a VOSHA inspector. I have been all over Vermont with little exception to my post. Yes nice people can be found everywhere, but why struggle and just keep struggling.
We have a nice house in Newport Vt, that we just can't sell. It is a middle to upper middle class house priced low, but not low enough for the locals and not enough mansion for the out of towners. Crazy! We now rent it, the area is sooooo depressed. I think Vermont is like a beautiful supermodel that is severely depressed. Now we appreciate the beauty when we visit our friends and we help the tourist business.

Oh I wanted to mention that you can't find the sexual offenders in Vermont, go to their sexual offender state website, it tells you how many are in your area but not their names, addresses, workplace, what they were arrested for, or other info like NY does. It is crazy! There is more sexual deviance in Vt then you can believe, predators come to hide in VT. I have met several in the school districts all around the state.

if you go to walmart in bennington, the maple syrup is cheap. also, are people really trying to live below their means--off the grid, raising their food? Or is everyone trying to live at the commercial grocery and walmarts?

try canning, hunting, fishing, living with smaller homes, and bloew ones means. taxes are still too high but you have to blame the people who vote the liberals and neo socialists in to office

After growing up in the Southwest, I came to Vermont in 1979 to attend a small public college and immediately felt at home as never before. The native Vermonters with whom I went to school and their families remain my closest friends to this day. I later reluctantly moved out of VT for a job (although I'm still thankfully within a day's drive), and I go back every chance I get. To this day, it feels like and truly is - home.

I e-mailed a real estate office to look at a house they had for sale.After 10 days and 2 e-mails I e-mailed someone else in their office.This person finally got back to me 1 week later with the excuse she was backed up with their e -mail sorry then she said she was sick.MY reply to her was the way she operates makes me sick.This has happened more than once to me in Vermont.Real Estate agents must be making a lot of money or they are lazy in Vermont.

This is the way Vermonters are....I dont mean it in a bad way, but their
sense of urgancy is different than in other places. I experienced the
same thing when I came here trying to find a job. Getting an answer
from a HR person or a response to a resume was an excercise in futility.
I moved here to get away from the maddening pace of civilization in the
lower states so I really cant complain about it. Sort of like moving
here for the syrup and then.......getting syrup !!!!

It is unfortunate that you had that experience, but not all agents are the same. I got into the business, to make a difference. My top priority is customer service (promptly and ethically). Not all agents are equal, and not all are from Vermont.
