Default Local Economy in Brattleboro Area

I've seen so many posts that complain bitterly about the Vermont economy. People complain about the high cost of living and the low salaries.

How true is this of the local economy in southeastern Vermont, especially in Brattleboro?

I have seen that Brattleboro is run-down in several places and I have seen (and paid) the high prices at the food co-op. (Well, organic food is always more expensive than supermarket food.)

Can anyone comment on this? I anticipate that I will find a job in my field, as I am a mental health professional and the Retreat is right there, as are several other agencies. And New Hampshire is 5 minutes away and Massachusetts is 15 minutes away. As a poster on another thread wrote, it is the manufacturing sector that is hurting the most.
