Make sure to Check out the Saxtons River Inn. Saxtons River is a small town with a great river that runs through it with a waterfall. People swim and fish there. The Connecticut river is 5 minutes away, a popular boating and fishing spot. Grafton VT is beautiful and has the Grafton Inn, very expensive. Many NY, CT and Ma summer residents in this area. Saxtons River has a big 4th of July parade, picnics and entertainment at the rec center with fireworks. Bookstore in neighboring Bellows Falls and of course the scenic train can be boarded there, along with Amtrac. Check out realtor.com. Westminster VT is lovely also. But, Saxtons River has such a wonderful main street community.

Check out the small towns of Pittsford and Brandon located south of Middlebury and north of Rutland. Nice place to raise a family. There are two hospitals within easy driving distance (Middlebury and Rutland)...both towns have great schools, libraries, and town centers. (Brandon is larger then Pittsford). If you travel Rt 7, it will take you right through both towns. Good luck..plenty of real estate available

Just a thought
Try South Hero, North Hero and Grand Isle. It is lovely there out on the island. It is very close to Burlington VT with a lot of family fun as well.

Check out Pawlet, it is on rt 30 just north of Dorset amd Manchester. 20 minutes from the awesome Northshire book store in Manchester, as well as many other awesome places to eat and shop in Manchester. Dorset has the field club. Bromley ski area with plenty of summer fun is abt 25 minutes away. Pawlet itself is in the beautiful Mettowee Valley, driving through Pawlet on rt 30 is breath taking. Pawlet is a small town but does have a cool bistro restaurant, the general store, which has everything you can imagine and it's worth the trip to just visit the store. There are a few art galleries here also, and Judy Lake with here awesome lamp shades and French and Tilley with handmade custom hats. I could go on and on. If you are in the market for a home there are many on the market here in every price range. The school is excellant also.
Good Luck in your travels!

Newport and the NEK
"You'd only be 40 miles from burlington and 40 from Montreal for sightseeing trips and weekend jaunts."
Sorry Dreamworks but this is way off try more like 75+. I know having traveled to work from Newport to Btown every day for 2 years because there is no work in the NEK. We now live closer to Burlington but I miss the NEK everyday. Thankfully we have family and go up almost every weekend. It is propably the most beautiful place to live if you don't need to work. Lots of outdoor activities but don't look to do much shopping unless you want to cross the border and remeber to bring your passport.
