Question for Vermont Republicans
Hi! I'm wondering if you identify with the national party. If you identify with southern conservatives. Do you consider yourself a social conservative? Can you explain how you differ, if at all?
Thank you!

Are you writing a theme?

That's a really good question. Thanks for asking. I have many such questions for different pockets of the US. How would a liberal atheist fit into a tight knit Utah neighborhood? Someday soon, I'll ask them. The only way to find out is ask. I find Sociology incredibly interesting. I have no agenda that will make itself apparent in three posts. Promise. I might have opinions to share, but I'm just looking for honest answers. These are real curiosities that race through my mind every day. If you can help, thanks!

Why this idea that you have to follow one or the other? Don't you have minds of your own? I am a Libertarian, but I tend to be independent populist (like Lou Dobbs CNN). I voted for Ron Paul in the primary and wrote him in in the general election. Most conservatives in VT are ultra conservative on guns/self defense and the Constitution, but more liberal on the environment, gay marriage and abortion.
Since you asked....
I voted Republican for Ron Paul (even though I am a Libertarian).
Voted for Douglas (R) AND Welch (Dem)!
Love Lou Dobbs (CNN) and hate Rush Limbaugh.
Can't stand Sarah Palin.
Did not vote for either Bush.
Own AND carry a handgun for self defense (I have a right to defend myself and my family).
Anti war in general.
Pro Gay marriage (I know Douglas vetoed and I am not happy with him for that. And no I am not gay! Every one has the SAME rights, this is America!
Pro choice in the first trimester ONLY (no partial birth).
Pro environment (there IS SERIOUS global warming if you don't believe this you are a TOTAL IDIOT).
Anti ILLEGAL immigration.
For keeping jobs and manufacturing in America.
Anti bailouts.
For smaller more efficient Government.
Anti welfare except for disabled, but for sustainable wage jobs for everyone (in the USA).
All for helping starving people around the world with food, water, medicine and simple housing , but not bringing everyone here who is a "refugee".
Send diplomats not bombs to help solve world problems. No more world policeman.
Leash American bully cops and the police state (VT, NH, and MT are pretty good on this one)
Nationalsitic? You betcha! That does NOT mean we can't help other countries with basics, but giving ALL our jobs away everywhere else and becoming a socialist welfare state? NO WAY!
I am a free thinker and won't let Democrats or Republicans tell me where to stand on my issues!

I am a registered republican, but consider myself independent. I vote for who I feel represents what myself and my family want in this country and state. I have my own views and don't need a Democrate or Republican telling me what I should or should not belive in. Government in my view should be small and efficient. I would call myself nationalistic as well. Take care of our own first. Especially when we the taxpayers are the ones footing the bill. Although I am not a fan the government giving handouts to people and families. The example I always give is when my family immigrated from Italy. They came during the depression and had less than a dollar in their pocket. They didn't speak English and were discriminated against because of their nationality. With hard work and no government assistance they became very successful(thousands of others did the same). I used the same philosophy in my own life to become successful. Why work hard in life when someone is giving you most of what you need. I know not all people abuse the system, but many do and it's like a crutch.

Very nice response. Thank you. You raise a helluva point. I think you sum up most Americans. Culture or media or - something - causes most to think they must fall under the umbrella of one or the other. But when a little deep thought is given, you're EXACTLY right about the freethinking.

I agree 68vette!
Being "nationalistic" does not mean that we cannot and should not send food whenever needed, technology to build wells and purify water, medical technology and supplies to help others around the world in need. The way we are doing it now we are giving EVERYTHING away to everyone else while Americans have to beg for food. A good example is the J1 Visa students from Thailand, Peru, Russia that come here every year for "summer employment". These aren't even poor refugees. They are wealthy college students who come here for summer jobs at Twincraft, Magic Hat and take their earnings home. They don't need this money. Vermonters can't find work in burlington. Why are these people brought here when we have a job shortage for the locals?
Everything is done to ensure Americans are at the bottom of the barrel!
