Every state has its own problems but at least I plan to be in a state that can provide my family and the chance for me to work for a better life unlike VT. As for not living in a shed............give it time..... even an avid fan of VT like you will slowly see the demise of VT. Get rid of the liberals and the Al Gore fan club and VT may have a chance!!!!!!
At the end of the day, my opinion means nothing. People should hear both sides of the argument but ultimately need to live here first to see the true VT....... BUT they should not buy a house when they get here especially if they see the light!!!!!!!!!!!
OK leedspaddy like Cleo I am not rich by any means. We have just acquired a nice home on 2.5 acres for an incredibly good price. My wife stays home with our kids and we will do quite well and live very comfortably. I am not sure where in the country you are now residing but there are many many areas of this country who while they may not have the same tax burden as VT are much more expensive to live. Where I have come from in MI had far higher property taxes and far higher home prices and was not nearly as beautiful as VT. And yes of course the wages for some people are also a little higher in those places as well, but a little research will show anyone those things too.

I am sorry that you had a bad experience but to go to name calling of people who disagree with you is wrong as well. I am a very staunch conservative (some would call me a redneck) yet here I am loving every minute of it. I have meet a lot of wonderful people as well and while I was awaiting my wife to come out, I had many locals have me over to their home and feed me. some great home cooking. Of course I grew up in Eastern Canada and you haven't seen a tax burden until you have been there, crappy medical system and all. When I left New Brunswick the sales tax was around 19% now it is down to only 15%.

Like Cleo stated everyone needs to see both sides of the coin but whining on and on about the mistake you made gets old after a while. Buck up move on.

For those that care I read this form for a very long time before my wife and I finally made the decision to come out here and it is one that neither of us regret. The people have been wonderful and the state is beautiful. It begs you to come out and play be it summer or winter. I have actually improved my health immensly since getting here as well. Both myself and family find ourselves outdoors being active far more than in our past leading to healthy living for us all. Also my drive to work is far less stressful along a nice two lane highway in Lamoille County through beautiful scenery, I look forward to that drive everyday. t is way better than the bumper to bumper drive I was used to.

Bottom line is for me and my family it was wonderful and we love it. Take your time do your research, it may not be for you.

I grew up in New Brunswick like I mentioned before so no real surprise for me. I am looking forward to seeing my 21 month old in the snow!!!

Red face Living in Vermont

I really love reading these posts because there are so many interesting takes on Vermont. Never been to Vermont but plan on house hunting there on Sunday and Monday and will be checking out the Derby, Newport and St. Johnsbury areas with Brattleboro to follow in a coupe of weeks.

Friends I have love Vt although they tend to stay in the Bennington, Manchester area and a couple of property there. Coming from NJ with it's high property taxes and housing cost Vt taxes and real estate seem a steal. Generally speaking where you have a small state with even a smaller population and not much industry the only way to pay for services be it city, county or state is property, sales or use taxes so I think that falls into the death and taxes scenario.

My job was outsourced to Brazil and since I was eligible for early retirement I was sent packing. I've opted to maintain the retirement position and as much as I love being within 30 miles of NYC I realize my pension and SS won't sustain NJ's current and ever expanding tax rate and NY is not even a consideration. From what I've read here Brattleboro seems like the best fit but not being the demanding sort I think the other areas I mentioned are a possible fit. So I'm approaching the VT move as an adventure. If it works out great if not well it's another lesson learned.

Default Vernon and Guilford

I am a transplant from CT and although a whole different style of living, I would never move back to CT either.
Well, I can give you my views from living in both Vernon and Guilford:
Vernon has a stellar K-6 School
Guilford has a K-8 school known to be one of the best in the state, which is the best educated in the USA
They both have very well trained volunteer fire departments.
Vernon has the benefit of a 24 hour police force
Guilford's constable has a cruiser that he can use to patrol for about 2 hours every week
They both have the Rescue Inc. ambulance service
Vernon has a recreation center with a pool
Guilford has better cell phone coverage
Vernon has 2,100 people, though estimated to be 2,300
Guilford has 2,046 people, though estimated to be 2,600
Vernon is mostly workers for the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station
Guilford is mixed with conservative types, rich people relocating from CT and NY, and transestites to Brattleboro

So, I recommend Guilford or Vernon, though Brattleboro may be kind of nice, Dummerston is too rural for me and Putney is too remote for me.

Currently, I live in Vernon. I lived in Guilford for 10 years and most of my family still lives there.

Great attitude, Pipkinra. I wish some of it would rub off on me. I'm treating the whole business of moving as if it were a life or death matter. Not so healthy. Separation anxiety! From NYC, from Brooklyn, from home.

I met someone who moved to Brattleboro from New Jersey and I think he loves the area. One day he was stuck on one of those miserable traffic jams and decided "I'm so out of here!". He had some famliarity with southern Vermont so I guess he didn't have the culture shock that a lot of other NYC metro area people would have had.
