My husband got a job in vernon, vt
My husband got a job in Vernon. I was wondering what is a good place to live around there. He is willing to travel like a half an hour to work. We live in CT now. I have 2 boys so schools are important. I have noticed that houses are a lot around there. Taxes for houses are realy high in Keen NH. Any advise would be great thanks.

Check out Brattleboro which is just north of Vernon. Also, Greenfield or Deerfield, MA.

A good place would be anywhere but VT.............tell your husband to not accept the job and look elsewhere..............VT is the worst state in the country and you would be a fool to move here.............If you come RENT first, so you can discover how crap VT really is

Just because Leedspaddy hates Vermont so bitterly, it does not mean that you will hate it.
I have been visiting Brattleboro regularly in preparation for a possible move there. I have asked a lot of locals how they like it there. Almost everyone I have spoken to, native or transplant, loves the area.
But the advice to rent first is, I think, very sound. That way, if you don't like Vermont and want to move, you can do so, without having to spend the time, effort and money involved in selling a house. It would be especially stressful if you had trouble finding a buyer and were stuck where you did not want to be, especially if you are under additional financial or emotional stress. If you like the area and want to stay, you can always buy later.
The economic problems are real, though. Many posters in this forum complain about low salaries and a high cost of living. Also, if you get laid off or otherwise lose your job, it is harder to get a new job than it would be in a more densely populated and developed area. I would imagine, though, that your situation depends on your profession.
Good luck.

Hi Julie,
Vernon is a nice enough little town, it's pretty rural and it has low property taxes which can be an advantage but frankly that's because it's also home to a nuclear power plant. You may or may not be concerned about that. But then perhaps that's where your husband's new job is? If so, he must be more comfortable with the industry than I am, just me.
There are many surrounding towns that are nice places to live. Brattleboro itself has what I consider to be high property taxes, as well as high housing prices. Although I don't have children and cannot specifically address the education issue, I think I've heard that beyond the elementary level the schools aren't great.
Within a 20 minute drive to Vernon you have such towns as: Guilford, Putney, Dummerston, Newfane, and Brookline, VT as well as Northfield, MA and the surrounding areas. I wouldn't think you'd want to move as far away as Keene, NH...it's well beyond the 30 minute commute time your husband desires.
P.S.: leedspaddy, you're killin' me. I would suggest you keep in mind that your point of view isn't true of everyone else and all you're doing here is poisioning the minds of potential newcomers who may very well be happy here, as I am for the most part.

It is important for people to hear all perspectives. And there may not be as many people that disagree with "leedspaddy" as you may think. Especially after hearing Vermont is ranked #1 in the country for income to tax ratio.

There are some advantages to the Town of Vernon, I believe, including school system, vouchers for other schools (including private) and you should verify this with the school/town administration. Guilford is nice, as is Putney. There are pros and cons to every state and I still believe there are more merits to VT than not. I am a transplant from CT and although a whole different style of living, I would never move back to CT either.

Renting is not a option I have 2 cats and a dog. I have a huge house now and we would have to put it in storage. Yes my husband is working at the power company. Not taking the job is not in option getting his licence will change our lives and better it. We have to stay at least 3 years then if we want we can move any where. My family lives in here in CT it only 2 hours away wich is very imprtant.

pucabear,
Your point is well taken and I don't want to be misinterpreted as saying that leedspaddy doesn't have some valid issues for him. I am just saying that his attitude is not shared by all residents of Vermont. Yes, different perspectives ARE important, I am not trying to homogonize (sp?) that.
cb
I guess it's the fact that his observations are, in my opinion, so acrid that they make me a little defensive about my home state.
