"The tax burden nationwide hit an all-time high this year -- and Vermonters are bearing the heaviest load. The annual study by the Tax Foundation finds that on average Vermonters pay 14-point-one percent of their income for state and local taxes -- in addition to their federal taxes. Maine is just behind at 14-percent."

After Federal taxes are factored in, Connecticut pays more taxes and Vermont drops to #5. Understand that the figures are averages, and not every person pays the same amount or percentage of taxes.
Still, add the cost of heat, and the shorter lives of cars due to salted roads, and you can see how Vermont can be a very expensive place to live.
