I'm a native Vermonter married to a French Canadian. We're currently living in Las Vegas NV because his Canadian-based company has an office here and it was the easiest way for us to live together while waiting for Green Card applications to be processed. Though we love the landscape here, Sin City is really not our style; we are hoping to move back to the Northeast (US or Canada) within the next 6 to 12 months (we have a new baby and want to be closer to our families).

In a perfect world, I'd move back to the Burlington area and pick up right where I left off before I moved out west. I like the community, the landscape, the culture, the fact that you can live rural and still have a reasonable commute. And I have friends and family there. BUT, there's not much of a job market for my husband, who currently works as a Game Developer for a slot-machine company. He's not dead-set on staying in the casino/gambling industry, but he would be happiest staying in Game Dev, or at least a position doing backend C++ programming.

Are there enough jobs in his field for us to plan a fairly secure future in northwestern VT, or should we be looking elsewhere? MyWebGrocer and Dealer.com both look promising; I don't think I'd want to leave my fate in the hands of IBM these days. What are some other good options?

On the flip side, where else in the Northeast could we go with a reasonable selection of tech jobs that *isn't* Boston or Montreal? We are outdoorsy diy'ers and are more interested in buying a nice chunk of land than in having a big-city life with all the amenities. You can see why we've gotta get out of LV! TIA.

MyWebGrocer, Dealer and GE Healthcare are the 3 largest software companies in the Burlington area. Not sure if there any game development companies here...but contact Champlain College. They have a game development major there. GE Healthcare appears to have some job openings now: Ge Healthcare Burlington Vt Jobs

There are lots of small development companies around. Physicians Computer Company (Physician's Computer Company | Pediatric-specific practice management and medical record software), Vermont Information Processing (Vermont Information Processing), Precyse (Precyse) are ones that come to mind.

Watch the classifieds in 7 Days Newspaper (Seven Days Classifieds > Vermont Jobs, Apartments, Cars, Services and Stuff). Also...LinkedIn is a good social networking/job hunting tool.
