Well, it looks like two preschools fit us and we'll visit them. One is in South Burlington and one in Burlington. If both are equally good, we'll still have the issue of where to live...What about public elementary schools, which ones are the best in SB and B? Which are the worst?
We greatly appreciate your help!

South Burlington has 3 elementary schools, with Orchard probably being the top out of the three. However, you couldnt go wrong with other two. SB School District is good overall.
I'm not sure about Burlington schools. Hopefully someone can chime in there.

You can check out test scores, for what they're worth, on the greatschools website (don't remember if it's .com or .net) but they're there. Stay away from Wheeler and Barnes in Burlington. They're both more downtown than Edmunds (I student taught there) and Flynn. In SB, Orchard is the most "affluent" school, less diverse than Central School, and Chamberlin (I worked here for many years and loved it) Chamberlin has the most diverse population of the three, but you can't go wrong in SB. If you do't mind my asking, what are the two pre-schools you're looking at?

Thanks. You have no idea how refreshing it is to hear that an entire school district is good coming from Miami Dade county.

btw - I'm a product of Central School...but don't hold that against them...

Hi,
My son will be 3 in a week and we're moving to Burlington this summer as I've just accepted an offer to UVM College of Medicine. I would also like to be given some references for daycare/preschool options. Please don't just private message, but share with the board. Thanks.
Opsklk, maybe our kids will be playmates. :-)

Hi Asya,
I have found the resource center to be incredible. You can register for it online and for free get a lot of information about each of the preschools and daycares. I narrowed down my search using that site, and than just started calling. I found everyone to be extremely helpful and friendly, even when they didn't have room for us. I will know more after our visit there.
Maybe a new mommy group for kids who are moving to Vermont is not a bad idea. I know my kids would love to know they are not the only ones...

I'd love to help out if I knew more specifically where you are looking, and what kind of programs you're looking for. If and when you can narrow that down, I'd love to offer my two cents, for what they're worth. I agree, start with Childcare Resources (I didn't know they had the on-line services, good for you for looking into that !!) and let me know if I can help further!

I am so happy to see this thread. I am also relocating to Burlington at the end of the month to take a job at UVM. I have a 17 month old that has never been in child care and so far my search for child care has been a bit stressful. I have found that most centers have really long wait lists especially for a child in my age group. I expected wait lists but honestly I'm pretty shocked that there are 200-300 children waiting on some of these lists. I started this search in Feb. when I was interviewing for the position I decided to take and so far I still have no child care solution. Any suggestions?

that was another problem besides no affordable housing in Brattleboro in not being able to move there. I think the Brattleboro Heritage Christian school closed and we have no where to send our kid to school.
does anyone know of another christian school in the area?
