Possible move to Pittsford, some insider info needed
Basically I might be housesitting an B&B in Pittsford for long term. I ran the idea by my friend and she said "Vermont is nice but I dont know about -far north small towns-" Sooo Is this town a place for a 20 something African American open-minded preschool teacher?
Seems I'd have the option to open the B&B up during the ski season. I will not make the move unless I have income squared away, and it seems jobs are far and few around here, though I'll figure that out on my own I suppose.
What kind of things are there to do around here except ski?
I may have a pre-teen aged girl later on join me, how is the school system for 6th grade on up in this area?
What would utilities run for a mostly closed up (just living in one room with the kitchen) 5,000 square ft house? And how much when opened up? Estimates for all seasons welcome lol.
I realize these are some wacky questions but I was hoping to get some answers before I reply to the homeowner. Any suggestions, tid bits, 2 cents are welcome.

Interesting opportunity!
I don't know much about the schools, but I hear folks say good things about Lothrop Elementary School in Pittsford and Barstow School in nearby Chittenden.
For utitilites, I can tell you that in Rutland City (very near Pittsford), our utilities on an old 2,000 sq ft house, including heat (oil & stove pellets), run around $200 per month at most.
Pittsford is a small town in Rutland County with a general store, a few restaurants, schools, etc. Just 15 minutes south is Rutland, which is probably where Pittsford folks get and do most of what they need. So if you want to know what there is in Pittsford, check out Rutland City and Rutland County:

Here's a previous City-Data post I made about what Rutland area offers.
I'm city-born-and-bred and have spent the last 20 years in Northern New England, with the last 12 in Vermont. Rutland County does not seem like "the sticks" to me. It's not as progressive as, say, Brattleboro, Middlebury, Montpelier, or Burlington, but it's plenty livable.
No one has ever treated me badly for being "from away." In general I find the area friendly and community-oriented. There's plenty to do in terms of outdoor activities and even cultural activities, as long as someone isn't trying to compare its offerings with those of a major population center.
Have you lived in an area of extremely low racial diversity before? Could you visit and see how you feel here? Based on my experiences with local folks, I think you could enjoy your stay very much. But I wouldn't want to make that assumption.

Thank you very much Sheryl for your reply. No I have not lived in extremely low racial diversity before. At most I've worked in it and attended school where the situation was like that. I never had a problem with it.
Your 200$ month quote, what all did that include. Water electricity and heat or just heat?
Most houses have fireplaces up here right? Ahhh a fireplace =] ...
I had ventured the area using google and I like it. Might have to travel a little to get my hair done tho! Lols
I am going to go ahead and email the homeowner, Im sure they can give me more direct answers. Like if they have a riding mower for the 3 acres of land! =O
Thanks again Sheryl

For heat (oil & wood pellets) + electricity + water + sewer, we pay about $320 per month. This averaging out the entire year. The monthly costs are higher in winter, lower in summer. It also varies as the costs of oil & wood pellets fluctuate.
Our house is about 2,000 sq ft and my husband and I both work at home. So that $320 includes cost of occupying the space nearly every day, heating massage rooms, washing loads of massage laundry, plus my home-office for the organization I work for running computer/printer/fax all the time.

True! Fireplaces suck heat out of the house. Our fireplace now has a pellet stove in it, which keeps things (and beings) toasty-warm.

LOL indeed! Plenty of salons, but questionable whether they've had practice with your hair needs.

Good luck! Let me know if you'll be coming around these parts and if you'd like to be in touch when you do.
