Folks from Vernon are easy to spot...they glow in the dark
It's a very small town a few miles south of Bratt, Putney is about 8 miles north of Bratt.

Vernon is at the northeast corner of Vermont. If you drive south from Bratt, I think, you go into Vermon or into Gulford, depending on what road you take.
Vernon has the local nuke plant, Vermont Yankee.
I believe the town is pretty rural. And I also believe it is pretty conservative. Someone who lives there told me it was the only town, either in the county or the state, I'm not sure, which went for McCain in the last election.
Here is the City-Data.com page on Vermon, in case you haven't seen it yet.
http://www.city-data.com/city/Vernon-Vermont.html
On Interstate 91, Brattleboro has the first 3 exits in Vermont. Exit 4 is Putney. There is a town between Brattleboro and Putney, Dummerston, but it doen't have its own exit. You access Guilford via Exit 1. I don't yet know how you get to Vernon. I know you can get there from Bratt via Route 142, which is called Vernon Road. It starts by the bridge to Hinsdale near the Brattleboro Co-0p.

Yup, I lived there for 12 years.
very small town, under 2000 people. Definitely more conservative in politics compared to Brattleboro or Putney.
Depending on where you are in Vernon to where you want to go in Brattleboro it could take you 10 - 25 minutes.
Center of Vernon to Center of Putney is right around 30 minutes - give or take 5 min.
Housing prices tend to be slightly higher than the other towns surrounding Brattleboro because the property taxes are lower. Vermont Yankee contributes significantly to the tax base.
Regards,
Leggo

Vernon, Vermont
I lived in Vernon am a VT native (not Vernon though). Vernon was developed a lot after VT Nuclear Plant came in. The property costs were more than surrounding area towns but taxes were very cheap because of Nuclear Plant. Then some years back all was changed & the savings were spread over all the state causing Vernon taxes to rise. Mine went up 62% in one year - I moved. It is very close to Brattleboro average 8 miles & Putney is another 8 miles north of Brattleboro. Depending on what you are looking for as a community I guess. Vernon has an excellent grade school & many good activities for young children. It is not really a "Vermont" town because so many out of staters have moved in also I believe the average family income is high. I would also say it seems it is very sterio type families - father working, mom at home with children. If you are looking for a town with the real country VT community I would suggest Guilford, VT which is about 4 miles out of Brattleboro. Hard to give exact mileage on these town as they cover a wide area so depends on where in the town you live. Brattleboro is very mixed town. If you want to live in a small city of VT there would be good. Putney is a very interesting town. It has mixed natives & new folks. I would say liberal with a lot of artists. There was a college at one time & brought in a lot of hippies in the 1960's. Small village, laid back.
You also should take into consideration the road conditions in the winter. If you want to live out you would need 4-w drive.
You can check but I think most tax rates are close in surrounding towns of Brattleboro. Brattleboro being a bit higher.
I personally can not afford to live in VT anymore so I live just over the border in MA (south of Vernon). My husband is employed in VT & I own a small business in VT. MA is cheaper to live in. Then of course there is NH which is just across the river from Brattleboro with Hinsdale & Chesterfield. Chesterfield is a very nice town (also W. Chesterfield). Hinsdale is not bad depending on the area you are in. Has grown a lot in past 10 - 15 yrs. Property tax rate may be higher than VT towns but there is no sales tax in NH. There is another nice town if you like a farming community and that is Westminster - about 6 miles north of Putney. It is a really pretty town kind of flat in the center with a lot of farming going on.
Hope this all helps you. I think you should get a temp. place & explore the towns and/or give more information on what exactly you are looking for in a town.

Lived in Vernon for my entire 22 years, best little town around. Wouldn't mind coming back after college. Only downside growing up here was that I didn't live in "vernon village" so I missed on on a neighborhood when I was a kid. It's strange to most people to have to be driven to and from all your friends houses until you got your own car. Prices are steadily climbing on homes ever since Act 60 which decided that Vernon was too rich for it's own good and needed to share the wealth with poor towns that don't want to let business move in. Vernon seems a little more progressive in that way than most towns in southern Vermont, or at least Windham county. Letting Vermont Yankee in and letting Cersosimo Lumber grow so large were a huge tax break to residents until recently. Elementary School is excellent and between them and the Rec Center there are a ton of sumer and year round programs for children. If anyone would like to know more about Vernon let me know, always happy to share about my favorite town.

Brattleboro is about 10-20 minutes away, I would think. I don't think you can use the Interstate, as exits 1, 2 and 3 are all in Brattleboro, and I doubt you'd want or need to go south into Massachusetts to get it.
I'm no expert on this, but the road I know that goes between Vernon and Brattleboro is Vernon Road. It is Route 142. It starts by the Brattleboro Museum and goes south into Vernon. The other major road is US Route 5, but that is a bit to the west. Neither is a major highway, but they are pretty quick to travel.
