Trying to decide between Milton and Essex
Hello,
I have to move to VT for a new job, and have two different housing opportunities. They are equal in price, about equal in commute and both good options. One is in Milton and one is in Essex. I've read the older threads on these two towns, but wondered if I could ask for updated opinions. One thing that concerns me is that on Sperling's best places it says Milton has a high property crime rate and a higher personal crime rate than the US average. (Personal crime 5 on a scale from 1-10, Property a whopping 7 on a scale from 1-10.) Essex averages 2 on each.
I am a single woman in my early thirties and highly educated, very into the outdoors and the arts. (I am originally from VT, but haven't lived there since high school.)
Any current input would be very appreciated!!

Essex is nicer than Milton. Higher incomes, more education, better schools.

Do give Milton another look. It is an upcoming town and has been for years. It is close to I-89 and you can get to Burlington in 20 minutes and St. Albans in 20 going North. There are some great new developments in Milton and the high school has a great rating. With all the new people moving into Milton the problems that it used to be known for are fading away. You also will get more house for your $$$$. Crime truly is not a problem in Vermont in my opinion.
Essex is also a great town, but what will happen to it if IBM pulls out?

I know folks who live in both towns. I would not put much stock into ratings such as the property crime stat cited as they are pretty skewed. Essex is pretty close to everything and this might make it more appealing. Other factors such as taxes and fees associated with living in towns may be a factor to be concerned about and do more research on based on your your economic situation. Milton and it's adjoining towns lured some of my coworkers for overall cheaper housing and for the most part they seem to be happy with their decision. You really need to physically spend some time checking out the towns to see what your gut tells you. One thing to to consider also is what is your tolerance for commuting in poor weather. Many folks will become attached to a town or home in the summer and then find the winter drive to be more of a hassle than they thought it would be.

Another vote for Essex. Closer to everything, though slightly more expensive housing. Milton used to be kind of "low rent" but that's changing or has changed.
