trying to hire someone to mow our lawn - what do we pay?
My husband and I are looking for someone to mow our lawn (about 3 acres). My sister-in-law's son is interested in mowing it for us, and asked how much we pay. I have no idea what to offer him! He'd be using our equipment and gas, so do we just give him a price per hour? a price per acre?
thanks for any input,
C in Bradford

My elderly neighbors pay a lawn service company $65 to mow their 2.5 acre lawn in Lamoille County.

Is 25 cents an hour too much these days?

It depends on the age of the son...
I pay $50 for 1 acre, the company sends 2 people, one on a riding lawn mower and the other mowing around flower beds, trees, etc.

I would take into consideration:
- his age
- the fact the equipment and supplies are yours
- approximately how long it takes
I would estimate mowing three acres would take about 3 hours; IF there is not a large amount of trim.
For a teenager my suggestion would be $35.

That's about what I'd say. Depends on the lawn though. I only cut 2 acres, but my wife has so many obsatacles that it takes forever.

Get a bigger tractor. Those obstacles will go away.

what is the rate for a good baby sitter, maybe 12.00 per hour? therfore if he needs a job offer the same rate 12.00 per hr which
rounds off to 35.00. If he does not like it, no problem! He does use your
stuff, and gets money tax free! Also do be aware he is not insured, so he
and you, need to work out that problem when using your stuff. I also would make it official, as with the inlaw, and her son, if he is a minor, and just say this is the offer, if next year, he wants the job, maybe an increase. I would say a pro maybe 55.00 with his stuff, and his insurance etc. also you may
check the neighbors out for who they do have! Just make it legal, and signed, so no regrets!
