VERMONT DMV (How much to pay)
If I have 2008 Honda Odissey I have bought for, let us say $30,000 and paid CA sales taxes and registration, how much will I pay when I register this vehicle in VT?

I had a truck purchased new in NY. I presented the bill of sale to VT DMV when I went to register the truck in VT. VT did not charge any sales tax (as that had already been paid in NY)
Registration was inexpensive -- I don't recall, but it was cheap compared to NY and nothing draconian like in CA. (My friend told me he paid several thousand dollars to register a new SUV out there 2 years ago.)

When I moved up, I had to show proof that I paid sales tax in NY, where I bought the car. Fortunately, I kept the sales receipt. If I hadn't, I would have had to pay Vermont sales tax.
I was shocked at how quick the resgistration process was. I was the only one there, and I was basically in and out.
But this was a satellite office, which is open only a few days a week. Maybe a full-time office would have been more crowded.
In Brooklyn, the process would have taken at least an hour, maybe two or more hours.
That's one benefit of living in a less densely populated area.
My biggest shock, though, was dixcovering how much less the car insurance cost than it did in Brooklyn. I nearly fell out of my chair. In Vermont, I pay only approximately fifth of what I paid in Brooklyn, for the same coverage and with the same company.

How much to pay for Car registration
Swede,
I live in Vermont and this is the way I understand. When you register your car in Vermont you will have to pay the difference in sales tax that you would have paid in Vermont to what you paid in California. I think the sales tax on a car in Vermont is 6%. So if California is 6% or greater you would only have to pay the normal $65 registration fee. If California is say 5% sales tax, then you would have to pay the difference to vermont which would be 2% of the book value of the car. It doesn't matter what you paid, it is what the car is worth.

That's true, too. I ended up paying out the nose in VT for an antique I purchased and registered within the state of VT.
