How are the vegetable gardens coming along?
Surprisingly mine is doing ok here in the north end of the state...all things considered. Looks like we'll have small tomatoes ready in about a week and medium in about two. I actually have a couple of non-green ones, finally. We've planted about 8 varieties and 6 are doing ok. I don't know if the other 2 are complete strikeouts or just far behind.
We've had tons of lettuce in our first year too, although now some of our plants have been "bolting"- growing straight up and dying. We've been eating free lettuce (minus plant cost) for about 6 weeks.
I planted potatoes for the first time. My plants are a little out of control
and I'm pretty sure not doing great with all this talk about blight. To be honest I don't even feel like checking them, not to mention I don't even know where to look for them.

Ours is doing OK. We too had lots of lettuce and spinach. Our tomato plants are starting to do well and we have some green tomatos out there. Our green pepper plants don't seem to be growing very well though. Basil is doing well.
The weeds are doing really well LOL.

I've had terrible luck with my cukes. Most of them were eaten by bugs and I only have a few plants left. Started them inside with expensive Park seeds for the bush type of cuke. I think our tomatoes are going to be wonderful this year, due to my vermicompost. We have 20+, most started from seed this year.

Oh and my rolling composter and tumbling composter (thanks again to the poster here for info on source of food grade barrels !) are doing great. Speedy way to compost and I am having fun with them. Now on to my winter vermicomposting project (red worms). I just got my copy of "Worms Eat My Garbage" and intend to compost all winter this way. Amazing how fast worms can eat up my kitchen scraps. They LOVE watermelon rinds and consume them quickly, leaving me super rich worm castings to use in the garden ! That has made my tomatoes grow very large and lush !

Well, not that great. Way too much rain. I do have some blossoms on some of the tomatoes finally, and a couple tiny peppers. The beans are doing miserably, and something ate half my peas (deer I suspect). The squash and cucumbers...too depressing to look at right now...my potatoes are doing okay, surprisingly. Many are in containers, the rest are raised above ground level for better drainage.

My container plants have not done well at all. I replanted 2 tomato plants in the ground as an experiment so I will see if they do anything.
This year my attempt at gardening has been no good.

With the warm weather and lack of rain for a few days here and there things have picked up some, but this is going to be a bad year compared to most. It's bad enough that we have all this rain, but it has also been very cool. A good indication for me is my pea plants are still putting out tons of peas. Normally by June the plants are pulled and transplanted with something else. Our cukes are still small plants. The squash has flowered just a few days ago and we now have small tomatos.

I tried some homemade pickles at the Alchemist Bar in Waterbury. Next year, I'll grow some cukes to make pickles. My mother-in-law was legendary at making pickles (although they reportedly had a blue tint). We even have her pickle crock. The pickles at the Alchemist weren't very sour- had a slight nutmeg type taste to them. Very good.
BTW, if you haven't tried the Alchemists Belgian Style frites (sweet potato and regular) you don't know what you're missing.
