One of my favorite things about Vermont is the gun laws. I like to shoot on my land. I don't hunt. As long as no one is shooting at me, I don't care if hunters cross over. I really think people moving in from other states and then posting their land is seriously screwed up and gives us flatlanders a bad name.

This explains something my family and I found odd the last time we were up there. The owner of the cabin we were renting offered us some snow shoes and told us we could walk for miles behind his property (only about 10 acres). We didn't know if he knew the land owners or what. I guess it didn't matter.

Common in Northern New England (Maine is especially known for this, a good thing since that state is mostly private land...). Not really so in Southern New England where there's so many antis. Interestingly, you'll find a lot more land is posted no trespassing in Southern VT versus Northern VT...

I don't know. A lot of them are out of staters (like the one who killed a guy sitting in his tractor). Most of the rest are during turkey season...I will say turkey hunting is the most dangerous hunting. Making a call like a turkey while dressed entirely in camo is just going to result in the occasional idiots shooting (or almost shooting) you. Closest I ever came to being shot while hunting. I don't turkey hunt anymore, between the tag costs and low limits and my last experience. Deer (and occasionally bear), and small game, not a problem so far...
I don't think much danger comes from allowing hunters on land. Compared to a lot of other activities hunting is quite safe. Hunter ed. is helping cut down on the "shoot at movement" idiocy. Hunting accidents are quite rare, considering how many people hunt in this state. There's just so few people killed in VT every one is big news where in some other states a person getting killed somehow is back of the paper news everyday. I would suggest wearing some visible clothing during hunting season if you're out and about though, as a precaution, and obviously stay alert for anyone around or gunshots nearby. Opening day for deer can sound like a war zone sometimes but it's pretty safe. I think our rough terrain is actually a blessing, bullets don't go far before hitting something.

I still don't get it. Do you not have hunting leases up there. It's quite simple and economical for the land owner. Not to mention you know who is hunting on your land at all times, which makes it much safer. I told my brother and a freind of mine about this thread and they were as puzzled as I am.

Sorry to say I would be one of those people. The last thing I want to hear when I walk out on my porch in the morning is a rifle go off 100 yards from my house. Or see stands set up on MY TREES as I take a stroll the MY WOODS and wonder WTH they belong to. I realize Vermont does things there own way so to speak, and I'm trying to look at this with an open mind ...

Open mind? I may be wrong but i can't imagine that the MY WOODS MY TREES thing would be all that welcome. You wanted HONEST answers.

Too harsh? I'll just use "private property" then. Are you saying there's no such thing in Vermont?

You won't fit in in the Northeast Kingdom. You may be happier in Burlington.
It is a big mistake to move to a place to get away from where you live, and then immediately try to change it into the place you came from. That will not win you any friends.
Sorry, but Vermont has a long and proud history of supporting gun owners. The statutes allow hunters to go on private property. It's part of the history and tradition of Vermont.

That explains all the stock fence gates everyone has at the end of their driveway down here. A lot of yards are fenced in with no animals whatsoever. Now i get it.
