What is wrong with this state??
No one says we have to turn it into Elizabeth, NJ (no offense) but for crying out loud get into the 21st century and become BUSINESS friendly.

I really wonder about places that are so resistant to any change. All you seem to hear in Vermont is "blame the NYers, blame the Massh*les." Blah, blah..

We're doing some hard thinking about whether or not to stay in this state or this area. Yes, it is lovely but apart from that, life is far too hard here. It seems like you have to 'know some one' to get any sort of job. If you want to volunteer, they want YOU to kiss their **** for the privilege of giving THEM free labor.

I was willing to adapt and play nice here, follow the rules, not make waves or say 'this is stupid or that is wrong' about life in this area (after all I am 'an out of stater..') but after almost 2 years, you know what...I don't care anymore..

Too many things are messed up here.

Yes, I know...91 goes south, too...Of course there will always be the people doing well to take offense...meanwhile, look at the exit numbers in VT....

PS I only drink Green Mountain Coffee, too...it's good stuff...but I don't blame them if they leave...

Out with the coffee and in with the guns and butter (and capacitors, too!)

High Gypsy! We here in Maine are shoveling sand against the tide to prevent from falling into the morass that most of New England is heading for. I am beginning to think the entire Northeast is becoming one lost cause.

Like it or not defense related spending at present is solid and it is good to see Vermont get a morsel. Bennington will produce armor components, we have Revison eyewear that make speciality ballistic military stuff, the new generation Kevlar helmets are in part produced here. Granted we will not see production facilities that employee hundreds or thousands, but for many small towns even a one to two year contract will allow some folks to tread water. The only ripple may come when the anti-war protesters come out from being sequestered and demand we divest from supporting the military industrial complex. Governement work is no guarantee. My spouse had earlier in the year gotten into a contract job position which was much better than her previous job only to get laid off several months ago despite all the "indicators" that the position was solid for at least two years. I really hope that things will turn around, but it's going to take a lot more than a smattering of small hiring here and there and it will require employement with hours and actual wages to really allow folks to support themselves

From what I can tell there was never any intention for GMCR to leave Vermont. Just more right-wing propaganda from the Douglas administration.

Funny, most governors like to attract business by talking about how great their state is. Douglas is the only one I know who spends all his time talking about how bad it is.

A national brand like GMCR needs to have manufacturing and warehouses in strategic points across the country. It's more efficient, allowing them to serve their customers better and is more profitable as well. Shipping coffee from VT to WA is not cheap. There is nothing wrong with growing manufacturing and distribution points. It can't all be made on the east coast and shipped cross country. It doesn't mean they are leaving VT or that the government sucks.

Until the left-wing legislators wake up Vermont is going to continue down the road of economic disaster. It's about time someone in government did speak up some about the reality of the situation. We can't be burying our heads in the sand pretending there isn't a major problem caused by the politicians of this state.
