Default South Burlington vs. Old North End

My wife and I and our 2-year-old son will be relocating to Burlington in about two weeks, as I recently accepted a position (staff, not faculty) at the University of Vermont. We are looking for somewhat "affordable" rentals that are clean, located in a safe area, and within walk/public transportation proximity to downtown and UVM. We have kind of narrowed it down to either a 2-bedroom apartment in Champlain School Apartments, located at 817 Pine Street in South Burlington - or, a 2nd-story 2-bedroom apartment in an older (but refurbished) home on Rose Street in the Old North End, close to the Artists Co-op. Any advice about or experience with either of these locations would be highly appreciated! Also, please feel free to recommend other locations... Thank You, Michael

First off to clarify, South Burlington is a seperate municipality than Burlington and the Pine St. Apartment you are looking at is in Burlington-a neighborhood known as the South End.
That said, if I had to choose between the 2, I personally would opt for the Pine St. location. I'm not a big fan of the Old North End. The Pine St. location is safer (IMO) and a little nicer. Pine St is a busy road though.

Pine Street! You will also be closer to a great park on the lake!

Thank you both for this helpful information (and clarification on "South Burlington"). Your opinions support my initial thoughts, as well. Please feel free to send any further information on the area you think it would be helpful for me to know. Looking forward to getting there! Cheer, Michael

I would say look for something in South Burlington proper. There are some very nice rental condos along Kennedy Drive and it's walkable (I do it all the time) to UVM and even downtown if you feel ambitious. I love walking from SB to UVM (in the summer) or riding my bike. Think about winter and think about parking drama and all that. Having lived both in Burlington and currently in SB, while I would like a less "suburban" area, but I do love having designated parking SPACES. It's pretty sweet. Also, you actually end up getting more home for your buck in the South B, because apparently nobody wants to live in the boring burbs!Read more: http://www.city-data.com/forum/vermo...#ixzz0Rr1mJmTF
