Default vermont question

Why is vermont so un populated? is it because of the weather, mountains or the economy or a mix of reasons?

Only Wyoming (of the standard lower 48) has fewer people than Vermont and Wyoming is way larger. So actually many more people could fit into Wyoming. I hear it's a tough economy and people grouse about the weather there, too. Actually, that applies to lots of places.

Stats here.

The mountains are beautiful in every season and every season is beautiful as well, but winter hangs around much longer than most parts of the country. The long winter wears even natives of the state. In the small rural town I lived in when I first moved here, the farmers who lived beside my property called it "cabin fever". The economy is tough on many in the state as well. Not everyone struggles, but a large percentage do. The cost of a home, the taxes paid, and the cost of basic necessities are on line with many of the southern New England states with much higher median incomes. It's a beautiful, fantastic place to live if you can live with it's few downfalls.

In a general sense probably the very same reasons the Daks are unpopulated, all of the reasons you stated plus the high taxes and not a very business friendly regulation environment

We have a service/tourism based economy which only supports a small population.

Bad economy, high taxes, and I suppose weather may play a part but NH has many more people than VT and isn't exactly tropical...

Vermont isn't really underpopulated. I'd suggest that parts of the Adirondacks are far less populated.

All of VT (with the exception of Essex County) has population densities higher than the very rural portion of the Adriondacks as well as northern Maine.

that maybe but the daks and northern maine are one of the most, if not the most sparse areas east of the mississippi river, but most of vermont's counties still have low population densities even compared to maine and the daks.
