Surprised there are no comments on this. It isn't exactly a huge surprise to me. While economists had doubts about the numbers, I recall one of them said that even by their own measure Vermont would be "only" the second worst in the country.

The job situation is a little better in Chittenden County, but not great there either. In other parts, there is literally nothing that pays well.

This is the unfortunately reality when a tiny number of independently wealthy individuals are depended upon for the lion's share of tax revenue. And keep in mind those individuals are likely not changed to the land.

There is a bit by one of the quoted economists over at Vermont tiger suggesting these results probably are exaggerated. Not that VT is doing well...

Well, when $10/hr is considered good money you know there is an issue.

This isn't the rural South where apartments cost $600 a month...

A lot of the people whose incomes went 10% are down to the last few-million in their trust fund.

Strictly from just my situation our family income here in Vermont has dropped in 2009 from prior years by 36%. Also, we are not trust fund or investment based in terms of counting such income for annual survival. If I were to count the loss of my net worth in terms of retirement investment losses then the 36% figure will push well over 50%. For the first time in my family's working lives, which spans well over three decades, we are finally on the public dole to a degree. This despite all of us, including our children, having four year college degrees. Still looking for all those wonderful jobs that are supposed to be out there.
