I agree with jin in that the posts that negetively stereotype Vermonters and their lifestyle should be ignored. There is an incredible amount of culture in Vermont beyond Burlington, Montpelier and Bratt.
The summer concert series in Marlboro and the Adamant Music School are world class and just a couple of many examples of small towns around Vermont producing incredible music.
While Vermont is definately not very diverse in regards to skin color, most don't really think much about it. Vermont is very diverse in many other areas of politics and other lifestyle interests.
Organic farming is a growing part of Vermont and there are now over 40 cheesemakers in the state producing some of the world's finest cheeses. There are many former hippies from the 60's who have settled in the 260+ small towns around the state and now many of them are on town selectboards and city councils and they get along fine with the multigeneration conservative folks from the agricultural sector of the state. In many ways IMHO Vermont is a very diverse state.
People talk alot about the bugs but Vermont pales in comparison to states in the southern tier of the country. I have lived in Putney, Chelsea, Montpelier and Waitsfield and have personally had little problems with bugs.
