I've posted recently about an upcoming visit to Montreal (next week). I'm going to Monteal (kicking and screaming) to visit my fiance's daughter. Would it be ecomically better to stay and Vermont (where?) and commute to Montreal. If so where would you suggest to stay for a few days that won't break the bank? Also, how are the leaves doing color wise?

Stay in Montreal. Why wouldn't you want to stay there? It's a cool place.

Totally agree......lots of great hotels at a pretty good rate. If you stayed in Vermont and you hit the border at the wrong time you could be sitting in your car for a very long time.

Good advice. When do you expect the busy times at the border? Typical rush hour times. We do need to take my fiance's daughter to maybe Burlington to buy a computer. She says that the cost in Canada is more than she'd like to spend. Comments?

No need to go through the Highgate border (the busy one mentioned above), try and find another little border station in any little town (Alburgh and then hop onto the interstate to go down to Burlington for example).

Not much of a comparison between a world-class city like Montreal to yuppyland Burlington.

Dear Bob,
I do not mean to disagree with wingfoot over is assessment of this god forsaken hell hole call Montreal(i.e.crap town)
Wingfoot must be a young lad(maybe under 21) who enjoy being able to come up to the "Tijuana of the north" where a 18 y.o. can drink till he or she end up puking their guts out on the city's sidewalk and Where also a 18 y.o. can have total access to the local sex industry scene witch i trust must not be prevalent in gorgeous Burlington.If you are coming from that standpoint than our friend Wingfoot is bang on.
Unfortunately if you are too old to be as "foot loose and fancy free" and that you must worry about real life,than stay away from this sh.thole,unless you happen to be french Canadian.
I could go on forever about all the nonsense one must put up with leaving here,that is why I (like most Anglo) have been trying to get out here in a worst way over the past 3 years. Since i do not want to just lift camp totally destitute i am stuck here till i can get what i want.
However i am getting so sick of this place that i might just say "the hell with it" and split.Remember it's one thing to come here to get drunk,go to the strip joints and call a escort but believe you me it is a totally different basket of fish to live here.If possible commute between VT and MTL.

No W-foot is in his 7th decade and has been to Montreal hundreds of time,usually for the fantastic theatre and classical cusine and music scene.

Sorry Wingfoot for making you much younger than you are,i am going to be 40 soon unfortunately.
You wrote of fantastic theater.... therefore you are french-Canadian,you couldn't possibly be English and say that.The few English theater companies in MTL are severely under-funded AND ARE BARELY SURVIVING!

The overprice and over-rated restaurant in MTL cannot old a candle to the restaurants you find in the Adirondacks and Vermont where the STRICTLY ORGANIC meats and vegetables are fresh out of the ground and the farms respectively.

As far as the music scene is concern well i doubt if i was to ask you about bands like:Ratt,L.A.guns,Megadeth,Testament,Mettalica,Sl ayer,Guns n Roses,Type-o negative or Dokken,you could give a answer.
So when it comes to music we are happily and definitely not in the same "hood".

WOW!! That paints a wonderful picture...why would you have moved there to begin with? It seems that only french canadians can enjoy Montreal? I mean my boyfriend and I see all the culture and looking to move near there, we are looking at Montreal but have our heart set on Quebec City. If it were such a melting pot of ****e then I wouldn't stay there no matter what.

BTW, I believe in my many researches...lol that there was a really nice bed and breakfast in Hyde Park...I'd have to double check but I think there was. It's a small town but quite lovely.
