Is there any place in Chittenden County that sells used snow tires? I don't want to invest in new ones for our new car because we drive very little. It's a Prius though, so we definitely need them. Thanks!

This is not in Chittenden County, but it's not far and it's for a great cause -
On Thursday, Oct. 23, and Friday, Oct. 24, from 4pm - 8pm people can drop off used tires at DuBois Construction. It's on Three Mile Bridge Road in Montpelier. There are inspectors on site. Tires that do not pass inspection to be reused on the road can be recycled and I think it's only $4/tire. Then, on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 7am - 3pm all tires that passed inspection will be on sale to the public for only $15/tire. Not only is it a great way to get rid of old tires or buy some good used tires for little money, but all the proceeds go to help purchase heating fuel for low-income people in the community.

I'm back to edit this. I just realized that the dates above are for last year's event. I'll try to find the correct dates for this year. Sorry about that.

Why not invest in new ones. I think used tires are fine and I put them on my trailer, but realize the tire is the first thing between the road and you and your loved ones. For me it is a safety issue. And it's not like you're driving a junker either. I paid $300 for 4 tires including shipping from tirerack for new blizzacks. If you figure they last 4 years, that is $75 a year. Well worth it I think. I imagine I will get more than 4 years out of mine also.

If you buy used tires for $15, it is still going to cost you $10-15 PER tire to get mounted and balanced. If you have to do that every year you will end up paying almost as much as new rubber.

If you are looking to buy, you can check out the Free Press, 7 days or look on Craigslist. We rarely have to invest in new tires. We are always able to find something with one of these services. Good luck.

Would you drive your car with no insurance? The depth of the tire tread is the determining factor on how well snow tires work, if you buy used tires half worn out they'll work half as well as new tires.
