I am quite familiar with NY since I lived there most of my life. I went to college about an hour south of Albany & my roommate was from a suburb of Albany.

It's just frustrating trying to figure out what to do.

If you want to stay in VT, then your best option as mentioned before is the Burlington area. Is there a reason why you don't want to go further north? It's not that much further north....it's more northwest..and has easy access to NYC via JetBlue and the drive is not that bad either. Montreal is under 2 hours away.

Although you seem opposed to NY, you might look into Saratoga area. Schuylerville SD has a good education reputation. There are some lovely areas (Moreau, Northunderland, Schuylerville, Wilton, etc.)
