Default Moving St. Johnsbury from Indiana

My husband has a job offer that he is considering in St. Johnsbury. He was there for only 2 days for an interview. He liked what he seen but, he didn't have much time to really check it out. I have never lived anywhere but Indiana. So I have many concerns. If you can give me any information on schools, housing, taxes, weather, B&G(Maple Grove Farms), churches, etc... anything to do with the cost of living would be great. I have been all over the internet comparing cost of living but I'm sure getting information from the locals would be much more helpful. According to what I have found, we would need to have a salary of high 80's to low 90's to have the same living. Is this an uncommon salary for management in this area? Also, I have been searching info about the Academy. I understand locals can attend without the fees. Is this just St. Johnsbury and/or the small communities surrounding the area? Again, any information will be helpful.

Very Expensive, 80-90's is likely an accurate number. I doubt management pays that much salaries are low in VT for most everything. If it smells like a COL reduction it almost certainly will be. Wait for the offer I'll bet you will be surprised at how low folks are paid. You have to accept a reduction in standard of living and embrace the intangibles of VT if you want to live in VT.
Students in VT that live in towns without their own schools have school choice. Others are stuck with what they get. Which is horrible as the town we lived in had a HS which decided its market for students with choice was to be the 'easy HS' screws the kids that don't have choice. I do know of some folks that were driving over an hour each way to St. Johnsbury for the school.

Being able to attend the Academy is a definite perk....friends were paying over $9400 a year for tuition and that was years ago. You can live in the following surrounding towns and attend free: Barnet, Kirby & Peacham(high taxes), Walden and Waterford, VT also Bath and Monroe,NH. I happen to think St J has a certain bit of "ick" factor and would prefer living in a surrounding area, but that is just me. I also believe that is a very high salary for St J. Good luck......

Thank you for your replies. It is very much appreciated. We should get the offer today. I am even more curious on the salary after reading your post. Sounds like it will need to be atleast this amount to have comfortable living.

St. Johnsbury Academy is phenomenal. I know of quite a few folks who moved to St. Johnsbury just so their kids could go there. If elementary schools are a concern I'd consider Waterford-St. Johnsbury School is big and is OK. I'd send my kids there but Waterford is smaller and more intimate and a little better from what I hear.
The town as its ups and downs. Some very nice areas and some not so nice areas. It is very isolated there, so if you are used to malls, etc you'll have to drive quite a way. Littleton NH nearby has some big boxes.
There are lots of churches in the area. Take your time and visit them all to find one that is a good fit for you.
Weather-cold, cold, cold in winter and warm summers.

Well, as fun as it was thinking of taking this adventure, we have decided not to take this opportunity to move. We were looking forward to a different lifestyle but I guess God has different plans for us. Thanks for your replies.
