I am planning to retire and move to Vermont, but I have no health insurance. How is Green Mountain Care? Would my wife and I qualify if moving from NY?
Thank you

I don't know about the healthcare. VT is very generous with some of their stuff, you can drive across the border and instantly qualify for reduced rent subsidized senior housing. Even if you own a house out of state. Be aware VT is one of the few states that tax pensions and some other retirement benefits.

I'm not sure what Green Mountain Care is. Do you maybe mean Catamount Health, Vermont's hybrid public option through which you can enroll with MVP or Blue Cross Blue Shield?

If that's what you mean, here are the eligibility requirements. I'm pretty sure that the costs and deductibles will go up after this year, what with the economic mess.

My husband and I have Catamount with MVP and the coverage has been great. Unfortunately, my husband has had to do high utilization since the end of 2008 and Catamount has been there for us in a time of terrible need.

We've compared health insurance costs with family in Florida and friends in NY & NH and though it costs us plenty, they pay far more in those other states.

The insurance costs in NY would be very high and together with the high property taxes in NY make it unaffordable. I understand that Green Mountain Care is open to all residents of Vt, with premiums dependent upon taxable income.

That's the name the state uses for its healthcare programs, all of them, incl. Catamount, etc.

I think a home in VT and one in FL would cost less than a home in NY, not too mention the savings in Health and Auto Insurance.
VT here we come....
