Our Great New Place
So, we won't be able to buy a house but we just found our apartment, the one I hope to be in all 4 years I'm in medical school. Landlord is absolutely fabulous.
My family and I spent this past weekend in Burlington, Winooski, Colchester and Essex Junction looking for apartments. Everything was old, crappy, outdated and just depressing.
Just as we were heading out of VT, got a call from a guy saying he was available to show the place. Oh, what the heck. But, we expected more of the same. The exterior and the stairs leading up to the unit certainly lended itself to us asserting we'd see "more of the same." How not! This apartment should be shown on HGTV. The landlord is a very conscience owner and person.
He's already given us the place after a quick reference check this morning (we saw the place yesterday afternoon). We LOVE it! So, I guess there'll be no mobile homes in our future. We'll be living in Colchester and what an awesome town. Plus, our son will be able to enroll at a school in a premier educational town.

Congratulations!!!! Love to hear when people found something that they truly like, and didn't settle for. Knowing several Landlords in VT, I must say there seems to be alot that let the exterior go. But do a AWESOME job on the interior. Something about Property taxes and not letting the appraiser in. So they go by the outside. Can't say I blame them, I have done this myself. Not in VT, But same situation. Well anyway Glad you like it VT is A beautiful state it isn't for everyone but it is Nice.

Congrats and good luck! Word to the wise the water in Lake Champlain in Colchester is not the cleanest nor is any east shore bay north of B-town.

Everything happens for a reason!! (I'm referring to the last minute phone call ) I'm so glad to hear you have a place you're happy with, and Colchester IS a great town. Are you able to commit to this apartment for the entire 4 years? So happy for you, and you sound relieved~even through cyber-talk!! CONGRATS!!

If you need any household/kitchen things cheap check out the Recycle North store on Pine St. in Btown. 20 min from Colchester. Some of the stuff is in great shape and is dirt cheap plus when you buy stuff there your supporting a great non-profit organization. Great coffee at Speedy Earl's a couple of blocks from there.

Thanks for the support and enthusiasm guys. I have been searching non-stop for things to furnish our new apartment. Things we currently have a falling apart. Don't really have the money to splurge but we're good with our credit cards. I think we deserve to create a sanctuary for ourselves in this new space.
MRVphotog, thanks for the tip on the Recycle North Store. We'll be sure to check that out. Could advice which areas are okay to swim in Lake Champlain? What places are nice beach locations?
VTeratheart, I am most certainly relieved. Now, I have a home base that will allow me to narrow down preschools for our son. I can start the tedious process of updating he address for billers and friends/family.
Any advice for my boyfriend who is a painter by trade would be much appreciated. Or, any other entry-level work.
Thanks,
Asya

There was a story about it just last night on WCAX-TV, the longtime CBS station in Btown. The problem is e-coli from run off and plumes of toxic algae forming. I think it sounds alot worse than it is as they monitor the levels regulary so sometimes it's fine. I don't want to burst your bubble cause I think your really going to like living in Vermont.
You will find all this out on your own but there are a few lakes and Kingsland SP south of Btown about 20 min has awesome swimming. We always attend the Champlain Valley Folk Festival there and the kids spend the whole time swimming.
