I have been looking into relocating to vermont, mass or connecticut. I was looking into brattelboro lately. Then I read a lot on how high taxes are in vermont. Can someone give me an idea of exactly how high is high. Like a 4 bdrm 2 bath 2500 sq. ft house? I live on Long Island currently and pay abit for taxes so I just wanted to know what I am getting into. Thanks in advance.

We have a 1500ish sq ft cape on 5 acres (3 bedroom, 2 bath)....approx 4k per year. We live in small town with very few services - a part time town clerk and a 2 or 3 man road crew. Our fire dept is volunteer, and our policing is done by the VSP or the County Sherriff. Our EMS services are a mixture of volunteer and paid (though not through taxes). The bulk of our taxes are for education.
How do you plan to support yourself if you move up here? Good paying jobs are around, but few and far between with good competition for them.

a brief history. We live in eastern LI, we will walk away with quite a bit of equity from the sale of our house to buy a new one. I am a hair stylist (everyone everywhere has hair) and my husband is retiring in 6 years from being a police officer. We are wanting to sell our house now and rent here for 6 years and buy/build a new house somewhere else to use and become acustomed to the area. My husband also works as a plumber part time and can do carpentry as well. We will have his full pention in 6 years which will be about 60,000 per year with benefits. Do you think we could survive in VT? We may end up in mass, ct or upstate ny? who knows. But my taxes here are 4000 for a 1200 sq. ft ranch. No garbage pick up but we do have police and good schools. Fire dept and ambulance are both volunteer

Default Try this

Hi Bye...sorry, I couldn't resist. Try this link - Vermont Real Estate Taxes Explained (broken link)

It will take a couple minutes to figure out, but it gives a breakdown of property tax rates by town. Very handy. Property taxes in VT won't touch LI, but they are higher than you would think, and salaries are lower. Good luck.

In addition to the info from the excellent link above one's home can vary in valuation from town to town so the bottom line is it depends on what town you live in.

As MRVphotog said, it definitely varies from town to town, and within each town as well...also, you will get taxed at a higher rate if it is your second home, and if you have a view, that can add a lot to it as well.
