Not the first generation release, no. Just like with all console purchases, I wait for them to get the bugs and kinks out of the system before buying it. However, the warning for the 3DS is to be expected, really. It can hurt your eyes if you play for too long - just like any game system. Eye strain is pretty common when gaming for long periods of time. The way the 3DS "makes" the 3D effect will just speed up the process of eye strain. For kids whose eyes are still developing, the method can hurt their eyes.
Simply:
Keep young kids in the 2D range.
Don't play for too long without breaks.
Tone down the 3D effects (you can make it 2D).
If you feel sick, STOP.
The concept of eye strain from 3d usage honestly is not really a new one. Any sort of 3d runs certain risks in regards to eye strain (in fact that is why when Disney first set up Captain Eo and later on Honey I shrunk the Audience there were requirements for admission)
Prolonged use or excessive use of any 3d tech will cause the same sort of eye strain, and any sort of eye strain can be problematic for younger children.
I'm sure eyestrain from regular tv or computer monitor is more dangerous than the 3DS. Do you think they would release it, after admitting it, if it really was? You know how many lawsuits will be filed.. with Nintendo?!
