I just got this. No verdict on it yet. I love Civ V excpet that it is time consuming and addictive.
G & K is much more complex. I am not able to run way into the lead on the basic level like in the regular game. Warfare takes forever and reqruies planning, you cannot just send one archer out to kill all of the barbarians.
UNfortuneately one of the improvements was not shortening the time between turns. I have a reasonably powerful quad core computer and it still takes forever between turns in large worlds with lots of opponents.
I have not yet had a chance to mess with the new naval warfare system. Sounds like a neat improvement. Losing embarked units to barbairan gallies always made me mad.
I think it's simply great. Just like with the Beyond the Sword expansion in Civ4, it adds features that should have been there from the start - like religion and spying.
I really like how religion works, spying is intuitive and can be managed from a single window.
New naval combat is .. well, it's interesting. With the all around great destroyer now a brawling unit. The added ability to attack and plunder coastal cities is a nice addition too. Plus there's the great admiral that can be sacrificed to repair nearby ships.
Plenty of small upgrades like a slight reworking of the tech trees, addition of new resources/buildings/units/world wonders is always fun.
I also love how they re-did the great pepole - now only the artist can trigger a golden age, others have their own special functions.
Unfortunately the game is as slow as it was before - I too have a quad core(i7) cpu and especially later on, waiting for your turn can take a while.
The only thing I think they truly could have worked on is the difficulty. After Prince (normal) the AI opponents don't get smarter, they get free units and techs and whatnot. They cheat. It's been like this since civ 1, I'm aware of that, still I was hoping they'd actually make the computer smarter..
Yac.
I'm almost always a few yrs. behind each Civ release. I'm passing on CivV because my gaming pc isn't connected to the internet for the obligatory Steam acct. I have Civ IV:BtS but don't like it as much as Warlords.
I have Civ V with God and Kings and Brave New World in a deal together. They both rock so much, but I can't tell you how much because I'm still playing the scenarios and the WWII mod. Civ is one of my favorite game series of all time. It's just so great. And I don't usually play huge maps so I avoid the long turn times, even with a mediocre laptop.
