I wanted to mention Xenogears! It was very philosophical (for a video game) and had a lot of different themes throughout.

For me Final fantasy 10 is still the high water mark. No other game has ever gotten me so involved in the story or made me care about the characters so much. I actually teared up when Tidus faded away.

ME2 and UC2 these are the first games I played where I actually cared about the characters.

In terms of depth of social commentary, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed III, Fallout 3.

There is a fair bit of emotional depth to RDR as well, and I agree that Homeworld, while 99% a space combat simulation used music and voice so well, that I could almost cry while looking at what was essentially a bunch of little ships floating in space. That is a game that needs a remake.

Really shocked that no one has mentioned Heavy Rain yet. That is definitely my choice.

Mine has to be FF8. I like how when Rihona is sick and Squall has to carry her. He is basically talking about how he thought his silence gives him strength, etc.

Here is my top five:
1. ff8
2. metal gear solid sons of liberty
3. ff7
4. mgs 4
5. castlevania the one on ps1.
I think FF6 - FF10 are probably the deepest games I've played. They had not only characters you could somewhat relate to and respect but they had worlds that I think are still the best in gaming today:

FF6 - set in 1900 - 1910 time period but with some modern electronics/biotech
FF7 - set in 1990s? but with magic/Lifestream
FF8 - set in 1980s? but with computer tech similar to today (FF8 feels somewhat like the 80s to me. It's still a good game though)
FF9 - obviously a more medieval game but with some 1800s stuff like the steam car rides in Lindblum
FF10 - Spira is probably like how southeast Asia looked back in 1000 AD while Zanarkand probably is what NYC looks like in 3000 AD (I wouldn't mind Zanarkand living myself)

With the exception of FF9 all of these games are real good for Gil Farming as well!
