I'd like to share with you my video retrospective of Killer Instinct Gold for the Nintendo 64.

If the video didn't touch on anything that you'd like to discuss about the game feel free to bring it up. I love playing KIG and I also enjoy talking about its strategies, metagame and collectability.

Yeah it really is and I hope Microsoft ports it to XBLA complete with on-line play.

Of course MS could insure that their next console is a success amongst the hardcore fighting game crowd by releasing a proper sequel during the launch window of the system.

The Nintendo 64 had a bunch of really good games that got overlooked simply because many gamers mistakenly thought that the system was just for kids.

Killer Instinct Gold proves that the N64 didn't just cater to children as it is a very complex fighting game that takes a mature mind to fully explore the sublime nature of its fighting mechanics. That is to say that KIG is not unlike a game of chess or a small play that's played seriously. I believe that the legendary martial artist Bruce Lee said it best in this classic scene from the cult film Enter The Dragon.

Never played it on N64. Briefly owned it on SNES.

I mostly remember my friend striving for an 80-hit combo at the bowling alley arcade.

Killer instinct on the SNES is probably more graphically impressive given the limits of that console than Killer Instinct Gold is on the N64. However, in terms of gameplay KIG is far superior with many conventions that modern-day fighting games depend on heavily today like; Super Meters, throws and parrys.

If you can get beyond Gold’s mediocre graphics you’ll be rewarded with a fighting game that’s as deep as the Atlantic Ocean. Those 80 hit combos which are VERY challenging to pull off are only a small part of the experience but they add yet another layer of challenge to mastering a classic that’s ready available to anyone who still owns a Nintendo 64.
