I'm on the fence because Wii U doesn't have the gimmick that the original Wii had to reel in casual gamers. I think it will suffer the same fate that the Game Cube did, even though it was a good console. This will be the first Nintendo console I will pass on due to being tired of the lack of third party support. I voted yes by mistake but see it as a big fat no!
The Wii U will not only survive but actually flourish once Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. 4 are released. Those two games will easily push the console above the 10 million mark of units sold.
Most serious gamers see the Wii U as the perfect compliment to the PS4 and casuals will appreciate the Wii U's lower price point and backwards compatibility with the original Wii's software which is selling at ridiculously low prices as of late.

I bought the Wii U for Mario Bros and Mario Kart... as well as the classic old school games available for purchase.
I don't own a Wii... my history of Nintendo consoles is NES, SNES, N64, Wii U. It's been a while since I've had one... and Mario looks awesome in HD.
It's very hard to tell. Nintendo has been focusing much more on 3Ds lately, makes me wonder why games like Sonic Lost World and new Super Smash is 3Ds bound. I'm seeing old IPs thrive on the portables compared to the consoles. See Kid Icarus, Metroid and the 2D Castlevanias, heck 3Ds has a small collection of Zelda games and they just got a new one.
The touchpad controller IMO is pretty gimmicky, they had more "waggle" room with the wiimotes but I understand they don't want to revisit old tech. They have to sell more base units first, not sure how they're going to pull that off... I think they did just get a price cut. Maybe start a kick of rereleasing HD versions of GC and Wii titles. I'm rather surprised they haven't released a Mario game with an online level editor they way Little Big Planet did. Custom made levels adds longevity to your games. The touch pad would be perfect for a drag and drop interface.
If Nintendo is smart they'll drop the price of the 32GB Wii U down to $250 starting on Black Friday. That'll give them a nice healthy userbase going in 2014 which is crucial if the system is going to succeed.
Super Smash Bros. 4 will sell 10 million units easily given how rabid its fanbase is. Mario Kart 8 has the potential to sell three times that many if its predecessor Mario Kart Wii is any indication of future results.
What the Wii U really needs, however, is a hardcore game that shows off what the console can do. For that reason I believe Nintendo needs to put out another F-Zero title with 1080p graphics and 30 player on-line support.

Wii U need to focus on hardcore multi-platform games to reel in the hardcore crowd. That's my problem with Nintendo is that they don't seem to care about 3rd party games. The exclusives are great but to have balance third party support is important. This time Nintendo can't lean on the gimmick of the original Wii and must produce games with good game-play. I see it being in 3rd place when it is all said and done and the first console of this generation to die.
I imagine it will be like the last gen and Wii U will be like Gamecube. It will survive but be in a distant third place. And that isn't really a bad thing as long as Nintendo keeps releasing the good games.

The only good games will be a hand-full of Nintendo brand rehashes and not have any blockbuster multiplatform games.
