Nintendo wanted something fresh and exclusive for there system only. The original had been on the market for several years. The creators decision was to make it completely different. I believe I read somewhere he preferred the gamecube version over the 1996 game.

The RE HD PS4 totally confused many PS owners. My brother assumed he was getting the original from 1996, not the remake from GameCube. He hates the game. I also prefer the PS one version.

Nintendo had a contract with Capcom at the time. This is also why Resident Evil 4 was Gamecube exclusive for most of 2005. Once that contract expired, Capcom immediately ported RE4 to PS2.
