I vaguely remember that too. There were all kinds of consoles and variations of them in the mid-90s.
Glad you found something that will play it, just be careful. Watch for overheating as you would with any other "surrogate" cord like this since it's not quite intended to power what you're using. You might consider unplugging it when you're not playing.
But if it's working, have fun playing. You might go to some of the places you looked at earlier like estarland for Genesis/Sega CD games. Otherwise Goodwill and flea markets tend to have old games. They should come cheap, for the most part anyway (some more rare games can still command a premium - I dropped a cool $40 on Final Fantasy III(6) for the SNES at Play N Trade a couple years ago. Most aren't like that though, and I've seen Genesis cartridges going for as little as $1.
