I did get the dreaded RRoD on my 360 a little more than a year after purchase. I contacted Microsoft to start the repair process and had the fully repaired unit back in three weeks. Even though I’ve played CoD4 and Halo 3 a lot I’ve had no further problems.

Fortunately I also own a Nintendo Wii so I had another gaming system to hold me over until the 360 was returned. In all honesty, if the 360 hadn’t been covered under the extended warranty I probably would have gone out and purchased another one. That’s because X-BOX-LIVE is such an excellent service and I play mostly on-line enabled games.

I've had my 360 since October of '07 and no problems. Even if it were to crap out on me, I would get it fixed. One of, if not THE best console I've ever owned.

I've had my 360 since Nov- 06' and it RROD last March- too much COD4 I guess- I got mine back within 2 weeks. It was a real pain but I haven't had anymore problems out of it- besides it sounding like a lawn mower and it won't open if I have it "standing up" instead on its side... Good thing you didn't get yours when they first launched- some people's 360s were catching on fire

That was actually false.

There are indeed a few incidents of 360-related fires that have circulated amongst the interwebs. However, these are few and far between - not anything at all that could be considered a trend.

The fail rate? Yes. That's a horrible trend of some of the 360 releases. The fire thing, notsomuch.

I had/have the exact same experience. Called MS Support, they sent me instructions, I shipped it off, 3 weeks later, new xbox, no problems...and I play Fable 2, Fallout 3, and Oblivion like crazy. Xbox Live is definitely a great service, and they even gave me a free month because of the inconvenience.

Here's my thing I brought it used (with a YEAR warranty) , so I could only trade used for used or refubished for refurbished. Saturday was pure hell. I had to exchange it 3 times! Finally on Sunday I found one that so far hasn't gone bad (cross ya damn fingas!).

If Microsoft is going to approve for retailers to sell their product, the product should work and not after a handful of exchanges or returns!

Though, I always advise people to research video games and consoles before laying down the money. Make sure you are getting your money's worth. If you ever need to, there are many people here of whom could have helped you in your decision.

This is because there are a few releases of the 360 that are impervious to the RRoD overheating issue - a few releases that can be left on for hours, days, and weeks at a time without issue. Just last night, I fell asleep to the "soothing ambience" of Keiv Moc in Tales of Vesperia on my 360. Actually, I was just too lazy to backtrack, so I turned off the TV and left my surround sound on.

As for the Red Ring of Death you are experiencing, is it the full ring? Three rings? Depending upon what is lit and what is not is the code, much like the DOS beep codes. Here is a pretty accurate listing of the 360 error codes. It may be something as small as having the brick connector partially undone or even just moving it somewhere to get better ventilation (See how one guy's PS3 killed his 360).

The new Arcades have the Jasper chipset as well. I picked up a Arcade a about a month ago and it had the Jasper. But I can understand the OP's frustration. A few of my friends had the RRoD within months of when they got their 360. I have a few other complaints as well...I can't believe how much noise it makes while reading the disc, I can hear it spinning sometimes over the games if my volume is a little low. What also bugs me is the AA batteries it comes with??! Why can't they include rechargeables? I had to spend another $30 for the rechargeable battery packs and charge kit.
