I recently fired up Warcraft III. BTW don't know if anyone uses Steam but Lucasarts announced they were releasing a number of their classics on there (no xwing yet though).

I agree about WCIII though. Fun stuff, although people are really snotty about it. You are on a FiOS or Cable connection and they will not let you DL the NEWEST version of the tower wars map, or that titan avatar whatever thing. You just keep getting kicked. Not a very friendly community! :P

I always loved anything by EA and Maxis...Will Wright is a genius.Maxis has the great Sim City series...I still play the original Sim City and Sim City 4(although that isn't that old),Sim Tower and the original Sims(Bob Newbie!)
I love the city building series from Sierra......Caesar III,Pharaoh,Zeus and Emperor:Rise of the Middle Kingdom. You can find them cheap at Amazon.
Microsoft came out with some great games in the AOE series......I play all 3 versions but AOE II is my all time favorite.Does anyone remember Pandora's Box?it was a very cool puzzle type game from Microsoft and it is still loads of fun.
Rollr Coaster Tycoon 2........more fun than 3 IMHO
Last but not least is The Movies by Activision.I can play that game all day.

_Doom2 (with mods)
_Master of Magic (with a much-needed balance mod that also removes bugs)
_Master of Orion II (again, with balance mods)

And I remember playing a lot XCOM - UFO Defense

The first computer game I ever spent much time with on a DOS platform was Snake. The game was simplicity itself: you directed the cursor around a rectangle to hit a block, and every time you hit the block your snake got longer; hit the wall or yourself and you die.

I occasionally go back to play some Commander Keen games, which are still fun.

My 20 yr old son recently broke out his stash of 5 1/4 inch floppies with Commander Keen and Duke Nukem and lamented there was nothing to play them on. Then he put them away neatly - and hopefully, in case he ever has a kid he can play them with.
