Just decided to try World of Warcraft, any tipsters out there.
Just decided to give WoW a try, and thought I'd pop in here and see if anyone could give me any tips or let me in on some of that inside information the gamers tend to horde and use against newbies like me. The game seems pretty cool, but there is so much I just don't understand. Doing the missions and leveling is the easy part, but whats up with all the jobs and all that stuff. Does it somehow help you? And what about the guilds? Is there an advantage to being a part of one, and is there an advantage to having your own. I went and bought a charter, and named my guild "Zamien's Apostles", but past that I have nothing. It says you have to get players to sign on before you form it, but it seems like everyone I meet is trying to start their own guild too. So anyway, any tips would be appreciated. Thanks and have a good one.

I quit a while back because they have made the game waaayyyyy too easy for people. There's no challenge or class differences.
The stock UI for WoW is pretty craptacular so you might want to work on sprucing it up if you decide to keep playing. Guilds are a great way to get to know people and have a group for leveling. I was in a raiding guild so we were pretty large and ran heroics regularly on off nights.
What class/race did you decide on?

Lol! Do you speak from experience? Just curious
3 years ago my friend tried to get me to play. I played through the free trial and yeah it was definitely fun and I can see why people are crazy about it. But I just couldnt justify ever paying monthly to play a game no matter how good it is.
Anyways to the OP there's definitely lots of strategy guides and dedicated WoW video game forums where I'm sure people can help you out.

I agree, don't start if you have an addictive personality. You will find yourself neglecting important parts of your daily life for the game. WoW and Evercrack, err Everquest almost ruined my brothers marriage.

It can be addicting, but the flaw is in the person with addictive traits.
The questions for you is what type of gamer are you?
If you like to play just to beat the game (alone), then you do the quests and level up. That alone has plenty of content; and you can repeat it for the other side (Horde and Alliance).
If you have real life friends who play, then you can play at scheduled times and do the content.
If you like to socialize with many more people; the game is a limited medium. You will end up talking via guild forums, IMs and even Ventrillos (voice over IP softwares).
After you reach the highest level of the game, you then will be required to collect items that improves your character. You do harder content that requires more than one person.
The better the item, the more people is needed to get. Thus, the time to manage all of that becomes time consuming, it becomes a full time unpaid job.

I would try looking for a casual leveling guild to get you started. Usually those are the ones that will help you out the most. You can have 2 'professions' and 3 sub professions (cooking, first aid, fishing). There are tons of guides out there to help you. Check sites like wow-pro or wowwiki for general information.

I would go with gathering for your 2 main professions so you can use them to get gold in the game by selling what you gather in the AH.
Mining/Skinning or Herbalism/skinning. The reason I paired them like that is that Mining and Herbalism uses trackers on your minimap so you can find nodes and you can only have 1 tracker on at a time.
There are 2 addons that assist you with questing, Questhelper and Carbonite. There are others but those 2 are the most popular and they are popular for a reason since they are considered the most useful by a majority of the WoW community. I myself prefer Questhelper since Carbonite has a lot off features that were just not needed for myself that are on by default so I didn't need to take the time to turn them all off.

I wouldnt worry about modding your UI just yet until you get a good feel for the game since the default UI is good enough while you're learning the game and questing.

Nope, you don't need a guild. A lot of people just enjoy doing the solo work and leveling up. Those that are using WoW as a substitute for a social life enjoy the guilds. I tried a couple. But they would spend two hours deciding what they wanted to do. That's not for me.
There are all sorts of internet sites that will advise you. Also books. You can have many different characters. The Warrior is probably the easiest to learn. You just get in there and wham away at the enemy. Later, you can start a character that uses different skills and spells.
