Basically I've been applying for jobs, where people want sit down interviews to be shot.
In the job advertisements, they say 'must have lavs', or 'lavs required', etc.
I don't have lavs but I have mics, that can be put on a boom, or on a mic stand and have it stand over the subject while being interviewed.
But if I tell that to them, when applying for jobs, the no lav things is an instant deal breaker and they won't want to hire me.
There one was job I applied for recently where I sent along a video of a couple of interviews I did. I also said I didn't have lavs.
The person emailed me back and asked if I don't have lavs then what did I use for the interview. I said that I used a mic on a stand, and the person said "Oh, that sounds surprisingly good!". So I was able to get hired for this job, without the lav, but not others so far.
The person was under the impression that it would sound worse than a lav. But why is this? Is there a mentality that lavs are the best sounding mics for interviews, and other mics are a fail?

Probably not, but it let's them know it's not a camera mic. But what is it about clients or producers that want lav mics only when it comes to interviews?

Buy one. It's not worth trying to figure out if there's some bigger issue or conspiracy here. Evenetually you'll want one anyway.
Well I've used them before but I find what I don't like about them is that they have more radio interference compared to a mic that is not radioed.
I like them in certain situations but I can think of probably 20 other things to buy for videography that I would say are worth more, compared to a lav mic.
I own a national video production company that has shot in 40 states and I prefer our shooters have booms. I’m also a videographer myself, and my primary skills are writing and directing. For my company I basically just produce and sometimes very occasionally shoot. Booms are better quality and while I don’t care all that much I would never turn down a shooter for having a boom. In fact that’s all I have lol I never bothered to buy lav mics!
So don’t worry, many producers like me aren’t idiots and we know booms are more expensive and higher sound quality. Our best shooters sometimes use both.
