Over in the general U.S. forum I started a thread about finding a place to relocate to where I don't need a car. I don't have a car, don't plan to drive any time soon. I work from home so commuting to a job is not an issue. Someone suggested:

What about a city in the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area of Virginia? I'm sure there are some areas that are very walkable in that area. Maybe something in Hampton, Norfolk, VA Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth or Newport News might do.

Is this true? Where should I look?

I just saw there is a Hampton Roads section here. So I made a thread there. Sorry about the 2 threads.

Richmond in the Fan district might work for you.

Again, if you do not have a car you can get one here for $300, but you will need a car in Hampton Roads.

There aren't many areas in Va. where a car won't be needed...this state is meant to be driven!

VA is a car state. You need to have one or know someone who has one, If you truly want to be carless then NYC (& its boros are your best bet).

In reality, there are very few areas anywhere that you can truely live carless. Even outside of NYC you will still need a car. However most places have bus service or taxis. So it is possible, just not many people want to put up with the hassle.

Default Noooooo Car. uhffffffffffff

When it comes to those areas. Richmond is the way to go. Otherwise dont show without a car. You will be stuck. I grew up in Va. I know all about it. When I think of hell on earth. I think of being back home, younger without a car.

In 2005, Arlington, VA, was ranked first in the entire U.S. in "walkability" by the American Podiatric Medical Association. But if you work from home and don't need the convenience of being next to Wash. D.C. then you will probably find the housing and cost of living too expensive in Arlington.
