My husband and I are thinking of moving to Virginia in the near future. We can not decide on a city though. We are looking to get a nice piece of land (about 5 acres or so) so my husband can hunt on his own property, but i need to be close to stores. We are looking for a nice town, good schools (we would like to start a family soon), we have friends near Danville, but i think that is too south for me. we liked what farmville had to offer, but i think it is to remote for me and i would go stir crazy. i am not the type of person that can stand it if i had to drive 40 min just to get to a grocery store. But on the other hand i do not want to be in crazy traffic and congestion like northern VA near DC. My Brother lives there and that would drive me nuts, besides it is way to expensive for us. We are looking for cheap property taxes and a good price on a 3bd 2 bath house. I know it sound like i want my cake and want ot eat it too, but i know there has to be some town in VA that would make us happy....... Please reply we are really looking for your opinions. THANKS!!!

Try Winchester or the surrounding area. There are already a few threads on this topic so if you do a Search you can get more info.

We are located 1.5 hrs west of DC in the northern part of Shenandoah Valley. Very large historic downtown with plenty of supermarkets, shopping, etc. on the outskirts. University town too (Shenandoah U which has now built a campus in NoVA). The landscape is beautiful and the people are really nice folks.

You can probably get a house with a decent price + land in the rural parts of Winchester and/or Frederick County. Good luck!

First, you remember to check ordinances regarding hunting to be sure five acres is enough property. Especially if it's in any kind of "neighborhood" -- even a development of ten acre lots may have covenants that prevent hunting.

Second, it would be helpful to know what you consider "cheap taxes and a good price" on the property. What is cheap to me, might be out of your range. Then people will be able to give more advice.

Third, I would strongly advise finding a job before finding the property. A lot of people move thinking employment will not be a problem. Same advice about this, let people know what kind of employment you'd be seeking as different parts of Virginia have different industries.

Best of luck.
