Actually the tax rate in Carroll County is slightly higher than Galax City. If you live in Hillsville you will pay both town and county taxes. Anywhere in the Galax/Grayson/Carroll area is safe in my opinion. I will tell you the police presence is much higher in Galax than the surrounding counties. For my money, I live in the city or close outlying area.

Thanks for the info about the Hillsville/Carroll county tax thing. We were thinking about heading to Hillsville after a year or os since that is where I'll be working. But, of course, we have to do some research to make our final decision. It's tough moving a distance and not being able to find a lot of information before moving!

What exactly does this mean and how is it different from a regular city? Is the only difference that it isn't in a county?

Thanks in advance!
You are going to love it here! My husband and I moved here from Monroe LA 15 years ago and have felt like we are always on a vacation. The most beautiful part of the country we have ever lived in. The downtown area is kept neat and people here have pride in their city and I hate to ever think of having to leave here. To be a small area we have such a variety of stores and educational opportunities available. We live by the high school and walk to the football games. Good luck and have a safe trip down!

Default Galax to Abingdon, VA

I haven't been to Galax, but may start visiting soon for business.
I used to live in Kingsport, TN and got to know the surrounding area near there.

I'd highly recommend visiting Abingdon, VA - about an hour from there.
Famous Playhouse, great B&Bs, a few very nice restaurants and the George Washington Inn.

Have fun

Well, we moved in on the 14th and are LOVING life here.

We're still getting to know the area but slowly we're getting to know it better and better.

I'm looking forward to getting to see all of SW Virginia in the coming months/years.
